The ballroom of the Palais Garnier was a whirlwind of gold leaf and silk, a fever dream of the Belle Époque. But for Julian, the music was nothing more than a funeral dirge. He stood at the center of the room, his tuxedo frayed at the cuffs, his eyes burning with a clarity that terrified those around him.

Across the room stood Count Valerius, the puppet master of the city's political machine. Valerius smiled, a gesture of practiced benevolence. "My dear Julian, why the long face? The champagne is flowing, the music is divine, and your debts are, for the moment, forgotten."

Julian didn't smile back. He didn't bow. He didn't play the role of the grateful debtor.

"The debts are not forgotten, Valerius," Julian's voice rang out, cutting through the chatter of the aristocracy. "They are simply being recalculated. I am no longer interested in your forgiveness."

The room went silent. The music faltered. The guests looked at each other, sensing a rupture in the social fabric.

"You've become delusional, Julian," Valerius whispered, stepping closer. "You are a man with a title and no land. A name and no money. You are a ghost in a fancy suit."

"I may be a ghost," Julian replied, his voice growing stronger, "but ghosts are the only ones who can tell the truth. You've spent your life buying the silence of this city. You've turned every heart into a ledger and every soul into a commodity."

Julian reached into his pocket and pulled out a stack of documents—the proof of Valerius's treason, the records of the lives he had destroyed to build his empire. He didn't hand them to the Count; he threw them into the air, letting the white pages flutter down like snow over the gilded floor.

"I spent years hiding in your shadow, pretending to be the man you wanted me to be," Julian said, his expression one of tragic serenity. "But I would rather burn in the light of the truth than rot in the comfort of your lies."

Valerius's face twisted into a mask of rage. He signaled his guards to seize Julian.

As the heavy hands clamped onto his shoulders, Julian looked up at the crystal chandeliers, his smile radiant and broken. He had lost everything—his status, his freedom, his future. But for the first time in his life, he was not afraid. He had stepped out of the shadow, and in that final, defiant moment, he was the only free man in the room.

The data didn't lie. Data doesn't have opinions or agendas or reasons to deceive. Data just sits there in spreadsheets and databases and does exactly what it was programmed to do, which is tell the truth whether anyone wants to hear it or not.
