The Curator's Folly

From the vantage point of the mahogany sideboard, I saw it all. I am the butler of the Sterling residence, a man paid to be invisible and to remember everything. My employer, Mr. Sterling, is a man who believes that intelligence is a commodity to be acquired, not a trait to be possessed.

The tragedy began when Mr. Sterling decided to "collect" the friendship of a certain Mr. Penhaligon, a man whose knowledge of ancient ceramics was as vast as his social awkwardness.

"A fascinating piece, Penhaligon," I heard Mr. Sterling say, eyeing a Ming-style vase that looked as though it might shatter if one breathed on it too loudly. "May I borrow it for my gallery's opening? A mere week of exhibition."

Mr. Penhaligon, a man who mistook predatory interest for genuine admiration, agreed.

I watched as Mr. Sterling placed the vase in a secure vault. He didn't study it. He didn't admire it. He simply owned it.

When the week ended, Mr. Sterling returned the vase to Mr. Penhaligon's modest home. But he did not return it alone. Beside the vase sat a smaller, crudely made clay pot.

"A marvel, Penhaligon!" Sterling exclaimed, his voice echoing through the small room. "The vase possesses a generative energy. It has... produced a child. A spontaneous ceramic growth. A gift for your generosity."

I saw Mr. Penhaligon's face. He was mesmerized. He believed in the miracle. He accepted the clay pot with a look of religious awe.

A month later, Mr. Sterling asked for the vase again. Penhaligon, now fully convinced of the "generative" nature of the object, handed it over without hesitation.

Two weeks passed. Then three. When Mr. Sterling finally returned, he came empty-handed.

"I have the most regrettable news, Penhaligon," Sterling said, his face a mask of practiced grief. "The vase... it has passed away."

I watched Mr. Penhaligon's expression. It was the look of a man who had just discovered that the ground beneath him was made of air.

"Passed away?" Penhaligon stammered. "It is clay! It is fired earth!"

"Precisely," Sterling replied. "And as the child proved it was alive, the parent had to face the inevitable. It succumbed to a sudden, catastrophic structural failure. It died, Penhaligon. It is now dust."

As I escorted Mr. Sterling to his car, I noticed the Ming vase sitting prominently in the back seat, wrapped in silk. Mr. Sterling looked at me and winked.

I said nothing. I simply closed the door. In this house, we do not speak of the truth; we only maintain the illusion.
