The apartment smelled of boiled cabbage and damp wool. Julian lived there with three other men, all of them former soldiers, all of them broken. They didn't talk about the war. They talked about the price of bread and the leak in the ceiling.

Julian had spent the last five years moving from one "benefactor" to another. First, it was a retired general who promised him a pension. Then, a politician who promised him a government post. Finally, he had ended up with Mr. Gable, a landlord who owned half the tenements in the district. Gable provided a room and a meager salary in exchange for Julian's "services"—which mostly consisted of evicting families who couldn't pay the rent.

Julian did the work. He didn't enjoy it, but he didn't fight it. He had learned that the world was a series of transactions, and he was a low-value asset. He spent his evenings in a dive bar, drinking cheap gin and staring at the neon sign that flickered "HOTEL" in a rhythmic, dying pulse.

One evening, Gable called him into the office. The man was obese, his skin the color of old parchment. "I'm selling the buildings, Julian," Gable said without looking up from his ledger. "The new owner doesn't need a foreman. You're out by Sunday."

Julian didn't ask why. He didn't beg. He just nodded. He went back to his room and packed his few belongings into a single cardboard box: a spare shirt, a rusted razor, and a photograph of a woman whose name he could no longer quite recall.

He walked out into the rain, the same grey rain that had followed him for years. He stood on the corner of 42nd Street and watched the crowds of people rushing past, all of them heading somewhere, all of them believing they were going toward something. Julian realized that he had spent his entire adult life seeking a harbor, only to find that every harbor was just another place to be cast out from.

He didn't look for a new benefactor. He didn't seek a new master. He simply started walking, without a destination, into the thickening fog. He was not sad, not angry, just empty. He was a man who had finally run out of places to go, and the world, in its vast, indifferent silence, did not care.
