Log Entry 402. Subject: Leo Vance. Status: Terminal.

As an Auditor for the Aeterna Corporation, my job is simple: I ensure that the biological assets of the city remain within their allocated lifespan. We are the cosmic accountants, the men in grey suits who balance the books of mortality. Most people are content with their seventy years. A few try to cheat. Leo Vance was one of the few.

Leo was a "glitch-hunter," a bottom-feeder who lived in the cracks of the digital city. He had discovered a way to siphon micro-seconds of life from the corporate mainframe—a digital parasite. To Leo, it was a rebellion. To me, it was a rounding error.

I watched him through the feeds for six months. I saw the way he looked at the skyscrapers, with a hunger that was almost tactile. He wasn't just stealing time; he was building a ladder. He used his stolen seconds to learn languages, to master markets, to transform himself from a street rat into a ghost in the machine.

It was fascinating, in a clinical way. I watched him navigate the corporate labyrinth, using his augmented cognition to outmaneuver men who had spent decades in the game. He thought he was invisible. He thought he had found a secret door to the penthouse of existence.

But the beauty of the Aeterna system is that it doesn't stop the thieves; it encourages them. We let Leo climb. We let him feel the rush of power, the illusion of transcendence. We wanted to see how far a human mind could stretch before it snapped.

The collapse happened on a Tuesday. Leo had finally reached the "Omega Point," the threshold where the stolen time becomes permanent. He stood in his new office, looking out over Manhattan, believing he had finally become a god.

That was when I sent the signal.

The "reclamation" is a violent process. In a single millisecond, the system took back every second Leo had borrowed, plus the interest. I watched through the camera as Leo's face aged a century in a heartbeat. His skin turned to parchment, his eyes clouded with cataracts, and his lungs collapsed under the weight of a thousand stolen breaths.

He didn't die quickly. The system is designed to extract the maximum amount of data from the failure. He spent three minutes as a hundred-year-old man, staring at the city he thought he had conquered, before his heart finally gave out.

I closed the file and marked it "Resolved." I didn't feel pity; pity is a luxury for those who don't understand the math of the universe. I simply ordered a coffee and began monitoring Subject 403.
