The Oracle of the Broken Pillar
In the sun-scorched valleys of Ancient Greece, where the gods walked among men and fate was written in the stars, there stood the city of Orestia. Orestia was a city of pride, governed by a council of elders who believed that their wealth and power were signs of divine favor.
Kastor was a youth of noble birth, but he possessed a spirit that was too large for the confines of the city's laws. He was a seeker of truth, a man who spent his days in the archives of the Great Library, studying the ancient texts of the Oracles.
Kastor discovered a prophecy: the fall of Orestia would be brought about by a "Broken Pillar"—a symbol of a failed leadership and a forgotten virtue. He spent years warning the council, urging them to abandon their hubris and return to the values of justice and humility.
The council laughed at him. They saw his warnings as the ramblings of a dreamer, a threat to the stability of their rule. They exiled Kastor to the wastes, leaving him to wander the desolate plains.
In the wilderness, Kastor found a different kind of wisdom. He learned the language of the earth and the silence of the stars. He realized that the "Broken Pillar" was not a physical object, but a spiritual state—the collapse of the moral center of the city.
The prophecy fulfilled itself not through a foreign invasion, but through internal decay. A plague swept through Orestia, and the council's response was one of greed and panic. They hoarded the medicine, leaving the poor to die in the streets. The city's pride became its shroud.
Kastor returned to Orestia not as a conqueror, but as a witness. He walked through the empty streets, seeing the ruins of the city he had once loved. He found the central pillar of the council hall, cracked and leaning, a mirror of the society that had built it.
He stood before the remaining elders and spoke a final truth: "The gods do not destroy cities; they simply stop supporting the lies that hold them up."
Kastor spent his final days teaching the survivors how to build a new city—not on the foundation of power, but on the foundation of truth. He died as he had lived, a servant of the Oracle, knowing that the only way to avoid the tragedy of the past is to remember it with a broken heart.
