The Song of the Great Plains
Listen now, oh children of the wind, to the tale of the Boy Who Spoke to the Earth. In the time when the world was young and the spirits of the plains still walked among men, there was a land divided by the Great Wall of Silence. On one side lived the High Lords of the Peak, who claimed the stars as their inheritance; on the other, the People of the Dust, who knew only the toil of the soil.
Among the People of the Dust was a youth named Elian. Elian was born with a voice that could mimic the cry of the hawk and the whisper of the grass. The elders said he was touched by the Earth-Spirit, for he could hear the songs of the stones and the secrets of the river.
For many seasons, Elian wandered the edges of the Great Wall, singing to the wind. He did not seek to climb the wall, for the High Lords had forbidden any from the Dust to look upon the Peak. But the wind, you see, knows no borders. The wind carried Elian's songs up to the heights, where they fell upon the ears of the High Lords like rain upon a parched field.
One High Lord, a woman named Kaelith, became obsessed with the song. She descended from the Peak in secret, disguised as a traveler, to find the source of the music. When she met Elian, she did not find a servant, but a mirror. In his songs, she heard the truth of her own loneliness and the emptiness of her gold-plated throne.
They spoke in the language of the plains, a language of rhythms and echoes. Together, they dreamed of a day when the Wall of Silence would crumble, and the songs of the Peak and the Dust would merge into one great harmony.
But the High Council of the Peak discovered the betrayal. They saw the bond between the Dust-Boy and the Peak-Lady as a pollution of the sacred bloodline. They unleashed the Storm-Guard, warriors who rode the lightning, to erase the song from the world.
The final battle was not fought with steel, but with sound. As the Storm-Guard descended, Elian stood upon the highest ridge of the Dust-lands and sang the Song of the Earth. He sang of the roots that bind us, the rain that feeds us, and the silence that eventually claims us all.
The song was so powerful that it shook the foundations of the Great Wall. The stones did not shatter; they simply ceased to be barriers. The wall became a bridge, and for one brief, shimmering moment, the High Lords and the People of the Dust looked upon each other and saw only humans.
Elian vanished into the wind that day, leaving behind only a melody that the plains still hum to this day. He taught us that the strongest walls are those we build in our minds, and the only way to break them is to sing a song that is true.
