The Game of Ash

In the glass canyons of Manhattan, power was the only currency that didn't depreciate. Leo was a "Fixer," a man who navigated the grey spaces between the law and the boardroom. He had grown up in the Sump, the lowest residential tier, where he had watched his mother and aunts wither away in a cycle of debt and disappointment. He had promised them that they would never be hungry again.

Leo's rise was a masterclass in calculated betrayal. He didn't climb the corporate ladder; he burned it and built a new one from the ashes. He became the indispensable right hand to the CEO of OmniCorp, the entity that effectively owned the city.

But power is a hungry god. To keep his family in the heights of the Sterling Tower, Leo had to feed the god.

He began by "fixing" the problems of his superiors—which usually meant erasing the lives of whistleblowers or bankrupting rival firms. He told himself it was for the family. He bought his mother a diamond necklace that cost more than a Sump block. He gave his aunts villas in the virtual tropics.

However, the game changed when OmniCorp decided to liquidate the Sump to maximize land value. The very place he had come from was to be erased.

Leo faced a choice: protect the people of his birth or secure his family's permanent status in the elite. He chose the latter, but with a twist. He orchestrated a "controlled" rebellion in the Sump, using the anger of the poor to justify a military takeover that would consolidate OmniCorp's power—and his own.

He played both sides, acting as the mediator while secretly fueling the fire. He became the hero of the elite and the secret master of the rebels.

By the time the smoke cleared, Leo was the de facto ruler of the city. He sat in the highest office of the tower, looking down at the ruins of the Sump. His family lived in luxury, but they no longer looked him in the eye. They knew the price of their diamonds.

Leo realized that in his quest to save his family from the void, he had become the void. He had won the game, but the prize was a throne of ash, and he was the only one left to sit upon it.
