The walls of the Saint Jude Institute were a sterile, blinding white, designed to erase the self. For Arthur, the world was a series of humming fluorescent lights and the rhythmic click of Dr. Aris's shoes on the linoleum.

"Focus on the pulse, Arthur," Aris would say, his voice a flat line. "Let the dream take you."

Arthur was a "Patient Zero," a subject in a project to map the human subconscious. Every day, he was plunged into a simulated nightmare—a recursive loop of a burning library where the books screamed as they turned to ash. For months, he was the prey, fleeing through corridors that shifted like liquid, hunted by a faceless entity that mirrored his own deepest fears.

But then, something snapped.

During the forty-second iteration, as the entity reached for his throat, Arthur didn't recoil. He reached back. He felt the texture of the entity's skin—it felt like static, like a poorly rendered thought. He realized the entity wasn't a monster; it was a function. A line of code.

He didn't fight the monster; he edited it.

With a single, focused thought, Arthur changed the color of the fire from orange to a deep, bruising purple. He felt a surge of electricity course through his spine. The entity froze, its form flickering.

"I am not the subject," Arthur whispered.

By the hundredth iteration, Arthur no longer feared the library. He had rebuilt it. The screaming books now sang his praises. The corridors led wherever he desired. He had discovered that the "nightmare" was merely a canvas, and he was the brush.

Back in the waking world, Dr. Aris noticed a change. Arthur no longer looked terrified. He looked bored. He looked at Aris not as a doctor, but as a piece of furniture.

"The simulation is becoming unstable," Aris noted, frowning at the monitors. "Arthur's brain waves are overriding the system."

Arthur smiled, a slow, predatory expression. He closed his eyes and reached out, not into the dream, but into the facility's network. He felt the humming of the servers, the flow of data, the fragile consciousness of the other patients.

He didn't wake up. Instead, he pulled the facility into the dream.

As the white walls of Saint Jude began to bleed purple fire and the screams of the books filled the hallways, Arthur sat on a throne of ash, watching the doctors scramble in terror. He was no longer a patient. He was the Architect.
