Title: The Ergonomic Purgatory

My cross is a Herman Miller Aeron, model 2024, with a lumbar support that is, quite frankly, a crime against humanity. I am not nailed to it in the traditional sense; I am simply "integrated" into the corporate ecosystem of the Department of Afterlife Logistics (DAL).

I am an intern. My official title is "Spectral Mediator Grade 4," but in reality, I am the guy who has to sit in the Void-Cubicle and make sure the soul-swaps don't crash the server.

"Jenkins!" a voice boomed. It was Mr. Thorne, a demon who wore a pinstripe suit made of actual screams and carried a clipboard that could rewrite your destiny with a single red pen. "Why is the 14:00 swap still pending? We have a KPI to hit by EOD!"

I sighed, a sound that sounded like a leaking radiator. "Sir, the client is refusing to sign the 'Consent to Essence Displacement' form. He claims the font is too small."

Thorne groaned, a sound of genuine existential agony. "Gods, I hate the new recruits. Just use the 'Implicit Consent' override and push it through. We're losing leverage on the quarterly soul-yield."

I looked at the "client"—a bewildered soul from the 19th century who was currently trying to eat his own hand because he didn't understand the concept of a digital interface. Beside him was the "vessel," a spoiled brat from a billionaire's family who had paid a premium for a "Premium Soul-Upgrade Package."

The ritual was a simple drag-and-drop operation on my monitor. One click, and the old man's consciousness would be swapped with the brat's.

But as I hovered the cursor over the 'Execute' button, I noticed a glitch.

A small, blinking red icon appeared in the corner of the screen: *System Error: Soul-Compatibility Mismatch (Error 404: Empathy Not Found).*

If I pushed the button, the swap wouldn't just fail; it would create a "Soul-Loop," trapping both parties—and possibly me—in a recursive cycle of bureaucratic errors for the next three eons.

I looked at Thorne, who was already checking his watch and complaining about the lack of decent espresso in the Void.

I didn't push the button. Instead, I opened the 'Settings' menu and began to subtly tweak the ritual's parameters. I didn't stop the swap; I just redirected the "Premium Upgrade" fee to my own spectral bank account and set the client's destination to "Randomized Reincarnation: Low-Probability Species."

"Done," I said, clicking the button.

The client vanished with a pop, likely becoming a very confused sea cucumber in the Pacific. The billionaire's brat ended up as a moderately intelligent golden retriever in suburban Ohio.

"Finally," Thorne grunted, not even noticing the discrepancy. "Get back to work, Jenkins. And for heaven's sake, fix your posture. You're slouching."

I leaned back in my ergonomic cross and smiled. I might be an intern in a hellish bureaucracy, but I had just earned enough spiritual credit to upgrade my chair to the 2025 model.
