The Efficiency of Void

K did not have a name in the way other people did; he had a designation. In the city of Neo-Symmetry, existence was a series of optimization problems. Every citizen wore a "Performance HUD" that quantified their efficiency in real-time.

*Walking Speed: 1.4 m/s (Optimal). Caloric Intake: 1,200 kcal (Optimal). Social Interaction: 12 mins (Optimal).*

K was the most optimal man in the sector. He had spent five years refining his life into a sequence of perfect numbers. He had quantified the exact angle of his tilt during a handshake to project confidence, the exact frequency of his voice to elicit trust, and the exact amount of sleep required to maintain peak cognitive function.

He was a god of the mundane.

His promotion to Senior Analyst was inevitable. His life was a masterpiece of precision. He had even quantified his relationship with Elena. He knew that a bouquet of lilies every fourteen days, combined with a 2.4-second pause before answering her questions, resulted in a 92% satisfaction rate.

He was happy, or rather, his HUD indicated that his "Happiness Index" was at a stable 85%.

One morning, K noticed a glitch. A small, flickering decimal in his "Emotional Resonance" column. *0.0001*.

He tried to optimize it. He read books on empathy, he practiced "spontaneous" laughter, he calculated the perfect ratio of vulnerability to strength. But the more he tried to quantify the glitch, the larger it grew.

Suddenly, he realized the horror of his success. He could calculate the perfect response to Elena's tears, but he could no longer feel the sadness that prompted them. He was a perfect mirror, reflecting everything and containing nothing.

He looked at Elena, and instead of a woman he loved, he saw a set of variables: *Heart rate: 72 bpm. Pupil dilation: 4mm. Probability of affection: 88%.*

K stood up and walked to the window, looking out at the symmetrical city. He felt a sudden, violent urge to do something sub-optimal.

He reached up and tore the HUD from his temple.

The world exploded into a chaotic, messy, unquantified blur of colors and sounds. It was terrifying. It was inefficient. It was loud.

K began to cry. He didn't know why, and he couldn't calculate the duration of the sob. For the first time in five years, his numbers were zero.

And he had never felt more alive.
