Title: The Echo of Rust

The air in the crypt was not air at all, but a thick, tasting soup of damp earth and ancient iron. I could feel the rust of the cross eating into my wrists, a slow, rhythmic gnawing that matched the throb of my own spectral heart. I am Elias, or I was. Now, I am merely the Anchor.

The ritual began with a sound like a wet sheet tearing. A fissure opened in the grey stone of the ceiling, and from it descended the Gilded One—a shimmering, translucent entity that smelled of ozone and old parchment. He did not speak, but his presence was a scream of authority.

"Number one hundred," the entity pulsed.

I felt the familiar tug. Beside me, a young man, barely twenty, was bound to a matching cross of salt. His eyes were wide, reflecting the oppressive gloom of the Yorkshire moors above us. He was the fuel; I was the conduit.

The Gilded One began the extraction. I watched as the boy's essence—a vibrant, terrified blue—was pulled from his chest in long, agonizing ribbons. My role was simple: to hold the tension, to ensure the soul didn't shatter before it could be transferred to the waiting vessel in the corner of the room.

As the blue ribbons passed through me, I felt his memories. A first kiss under a willow tree. The smell of fresh rain on hot pavement. The terror of a father's belt. For a moment, I was him, and the rust on my wrists felt like a distant dream.

But then came the snap.

The transfer failed. The Gilded One hissed, a sound of pure disappointment. The blue essence recoiled, slamming back into the boy with the force of a landslide. He shrieked, a sound that echoed through the crypt and seemed to shake the very foundations of the manor above.

"Inefficient," the entity pulsed.

With a flick of a spectral wrist, the Gilded One vanished, leaving us in the suffocating silence. The boy collapsed, his spirit broken, his eyes vacant. I remained, nailed to my rusted iron, feeling the clock reset.

I remembered the ninety-nine before him. The way their hope had curdled into hatred, then into a hollow, echoing silence. I had "won" my survival every time, absorbing a fraction of their vitality to keep my own consciousness from dissolving into the damp earth.

I looked at my wrists. The rust had grown. It was no longer just on the cross; it was spreading into my spectral skin, turning my essence the color of dried blood.

I am the Anchor. I am the survivor. And as I listened to the boy's shallow, rattling breaths, I realized that the only thing more terrifying than the ritual was the knowledge that I would be here to welcome the hundred-and-first.

The moors are silent tonight, but beneath the heather and the peat, the rust continues to grow.
