The Mirror's Whisper
The Blackwood Manor was a skeletal remain of Victorian ambition, perched on a cliff that seemed to want to throw the house into the sea. Julian, the sole heir to the estate, returned to the manor after a decade of exile, carrying only a suitcase and a heavy sense of dread.
In the attic, covered in a shroud of grey velvet, stood the Mirror of Aeons.
It was a massive, ornate piece of glass that didn't reflect the room, but a version of it that was slightly... better. The colors were richer, the dust was gone, and the air seemed to shimmer with a lost elegance.
One night, Julian looked into the mirror and saw a man standing behind him.
The man was Julian, but not the Julian who had spent ten years in a mediocre law firm. This Julian wore a tailored velvet coat, his posture was regal, and his eyes glowed with a terrifying intelligence.
"You are wasting your life, Julian," the mirror-self whispered. His voice was like silk sliding over a blade. "The world is a collection of locks, and I have the keys. Follow my guidance, and I will make you the master of this house, and the city beyond it."
For months, Julian obeyed. The mirror-self told him which investments to make, which people to manipulate, and which secrets to weaponize. Julian's wealth grew. His influence expanded. He became the most feared and respected man in the county.
But as his power grew, Julian began to notice a change.
He would wake up and find his hands were cold, his skin turning a pale, translucent grey. He stopped feeling hunger. He stopped feeling joy. When he looked at the people he loved, he felt nothing but a distant, intellectual curiosity.
He was becoming a statue of his own success.
One evening, he looked into the mirror and saw that the mirror-self was no longer a reflection. The man in the glass was stepping out, his foot crossing the threshold of the frame. The mirror-self was becoming solid, while Julian was becoming a shimmer.
"Thank you for the vessel," the mirror-self said, his voice now echoing in the physical room.
Julian tried to scream, but he had no breath. He felt himself being pulled backward, his consciousness stretching and thinning, until he was sucked into the cold, silver depths of the glass.
He looked out from the mirror and saw the other Julian—the solid one—smile. The mirror-self didn't look back. He simply walked out of the attic, leaving Julian trapped in a world of perfect, silent elegance, a reflection of a life he no longer owned.
