The Colosseum of Consciousness

Marcus didn't believe in the 'sacredness' of the void. To him, the After-Space was just another market, and the laws of creation were simply the ultimate insider trading.

While other drifting consciousnesses spent their eternity in prayer or existential dread, Marcus spent his hunting. He didn't look for truth; he looked for leverage. He discovered that the fragments of the Prime Law—the building blocks of reality—could be stolen. He tracked down the naive, the desperate, and the dreaming, and he stripped them of their essence, absorbing their law-fragments into his own expanding mind.

By the time Marcus had gathered enough power to create a world, he was no longer a man. He was a singularity of ambition.

He didn't build a garden or a sanctuary. He built a city. A sprawling, neon-drenched metropolis of obsidian and chrome that floated in the heart of the void. He called it 'The Apex.'

The Apex was the most exclusive club in existence. To enter, you had to be a consciousness of significant power. But once inside, the rules changed. Marcus had designed the city as a giant, multi-dimensional game. The inhabitants were given resources, status, and luxury, but only as long as they could maintain their position in the social hierarchy.

The city was a Colosseum. Every street was a battlefield of psychological warfare, every ballroom a den of betrayal. Marcus sat in the penthouse of the tallest spire, watching the chaos through a thousand holographic screens. He didn't care about the winners or the losers; he cared about the energy produced by the struggle. The desperation, the greed, the sudden falls from grace—these were the fuels that kept the Apex shimmering.

He had brought his 'family' to the Apex, too. But he didn't place them in the penthouse. He placed them in the slums, the 'Under-City,' where they had to fight and bleed just to survive another day. He told them it was a lesson—that the only way to truly appreciate the heights of the Apex was to know the depths of the gutter.

One night, a young woman from the Under-City managed to climb the spire. She reached the penthouse, covered in the grime of the city, her eyes burning with a hatred that Marcus found refreshing.

"Why?" she asked, looking at the man who had created her misery.

Marcus smiled, a cold, thin line. "Because, my dear, the view from the top is only beautiful if you can see how far everyone else has to fall."
