Title: The Gilded Farce

The Blackwood Estate was a sprawling, decaying corpse of a house, situated in the humid, oppressive heart of Mississippi. It had once been the jewel of the county, but by the time Clarence returned to it, the wallpaper was peeling like dead skin and the gardens were choked with kudzu.

Clarence had returned with a suitcase full of money—money obtained through a series of 'consultancies' that would have made a mob boss blush. He intended to restore the estate to its former glory, to prove to the town that the Blackwoods were still the masters of the soil.

He began with a frenzy of spending. He bought Italian marble for the foyer, gold-leafed cornices for the ballroom, and a fleet of silver cars that looked absurd against the muddy roads of the South.

But the house had a memory.

The first time he spent a million dollars on a new library, he woke up to find a figure standing in the corner of the room. It was a man in rags, his face a blurred smudge of grey, smelling of river mud and old blood. The figure didn't speak; it just pointed at the gold-leafed books.

Clarence ignored it. He spent another million on a crystal chandelier. The next morning, two more figures appeared—women with hollow eyes and skeletal hands, weeping silently in the hallways.

As the luxury of the house increased, the hauntings grew more frequent and more grotesque. The estate became a surreal gallery of the damned. He would dine on Beluga caviar while a spectral slave from the 1850s stood behind him, whispering the names of the forgotten.

The irony was a physical weight. The more he tried to erase the poverty and decay of his family's history with gold, the more that history manifested as a haunting. His wealth was not a shield; it was a beacon for every ghost the Blackwood name had ever created.

One night, during a masquerade ball intended to announce his return to society, the illusions broke. The guests saw the ghosts. They saw the rotting walls beneath the gold leaf and the blood seeping through the marble.

Clarence stood in the center of the ballroom, draped in a velvet cape, surrounded by the screams of the living and the whispers of the dead. He realized that he hadn't restored the estate; he had merely gilded the tomb.

He sat down in his gold-plated chair and laughed—a jagged, broken sound. He was the richest man in the county, and he was the only one who could see that he was ruling over a kingdom of dust.
