The bird is sleeping. That is the first thing I understand. And perhaps the only thing I will ever understand with any certainty.

Maya was sitting in the lobby. She was small. She wore a yellow coat. The yellow coat was bright against the gray marble. She was very still. I sat next to her because there was no one else to sit next to and because the floor was cold and I like warm things. I hummed the tune my mother used to hum. The one about the little bird in the tree.

Security guard came. He was tall. His face was flat like a photograph. He looked at Maya. He looked at me. He picked up his phone and his hand was shaking. I could tell. Hands are important to me. I can tell when a hand is shaking even from across the room.

They came quickly. Uniforms. White shirts. The kind of people who solve problems by arriving. They picked Maya up. Her head went backward. It looked like a bird falling from a tree. I kept humming. The bird is sleeping, I said. But they didn't hear me. Or they heard me wrong.

At the station, the room was small. The walls were the color of old coffee. A man with sharp teeth asked me questions. He said, did you hurt her? I said, the bird is sleeping. He said, don't lie to me. I said, I'm not lying. The bird is sleeping. He wrote something down. I could see his pen moving. I couldn't read what he wrote but I could imagine it: I killed her. That's what he wrote. That's what he always writes when someone doesn't speak his language.

The trial was fast. The public defender had four hundred cases. He looked tired. He looked at me and he saw a man who couldn't speak and he decided it was easier to lose than to try. The prosecutor was sharp. She took my words and she made them into sentences I didn't recognize. The bird is sleeping became I put her to sleep. I was trying to help became I was trying to hide it. The jury saw a man who changed his story. One day I did it, next day I didn't, next day the bird is sleeping. They saw inconsistency. They saw guilt. They saw what the prosecutor wanted them to see.

In the federal prison, the cell was cold. Cold is a word I know well. I am familiar with cold. Cell Seven had four men. Roman was the coldest of them all. He was Russian. He spoke English with the precision of a man who has counted his syllables before saying them. He was an emigre. He had stolen from the wrong person and learned that the wrong person had friends in high places and the high places had friends in prisons.

Roman looked at me the way you look at a specimen in a jar. Intrigued and disgusted in equal measure. He asked me questions in Russian. I didn't understand Russian. I said, the bird is sleeping. Roman's face changed. Just a little. But I saw it. I see things other people don't see.

I do something that Roman finds extraordinary. I tap the pipes. Tap tap tap. Different pipes sound different. The one near the door is hollow. The one near the window is solid. The one in the corner makes a sound like a bell. I arrange the taps and suddenly the cell has acoustics. Not great acoustics. But enough. When you speak in Cell Seven after I've tuned the pipes, your voice rings clear. It is the most beautiful thing I have ever done.

Roman started listening. Really listening. He sat on his bunk and tapped the pipes with me and closed his eyes and for a moment his face was not flat. It was soft.

Clara came to visit. My daughter. She had my eyes. She had my mouth. She had something I didn't have: a mind that worked the way minds are supposed to work. She sat behind the glass and I started humming. The tune from the lobby. The one about the bird. Clara's face went white. Then she understood. I wasn't confessing. I was describing. The bird is sleeping. The bird is sleeping. She put her hand against the glass. I put my hand against the glass. Our hands almost touched. Almost.

Roman helped after that. Not because he cared. Because he was fascinated. I am the only person in the world who doesn't pretend. I don't perform. I just am. And in a world of performance, being is the most radical act of all.

The escape was a theater production. The prison had a cultural event. They put on a play. Roman organized it. He got me and Clara on stage. Wires ran from the ceiling. We flew across the auditorium. For thirty seconds, we were free. The guards thought it was part of the show. The audience clapped. I looked at Clara. She was crying. I didn't understand why. I was flying.

They discovered the wires. The director of the show panicked. They turned off the power. We dropped. Not far -- two feet. But two feet is enough when you're expecting to fly.

Arthur was transferred to solitary. The darkness is not so bad there. I like dark. In the dark, the bird is always sleeping. I tap the walls. Tap tap tap. The pipes are gone but the walls still sing. Different song. Sadder song. But still a song.

Clara visits sometimes. She brings papers. She brings questions. She brings the same questions every time. Are you innocent? I don't know, I say. I know about the bird. The bird is sleeping. That's all. That's always all.

Roman was transferred to ADX Florence. The most secure prison in the country. He wrote me a letter. It had one line: you are the only person I ever knew who was truly free. I don't understand free. But I keep the letter. I tap it. Tap tap tap.

Sometimes I wonder. Did I kill the bird? Or was the bird just sleeping and I found her and I tried to wake her up? I can't remember the before. The before is fog. The after is clear. I am here. The bird is sleeping. That's all.

Is it?

Sometimes when I close my eyes, I see a yellow coat on gray marble. I see a security guard with a shaking hand. I see a man with sharp teeth writing words I cannot read.

Or sometimes -- and this is the part that worries me -- I see myself standing over the yellow coat. I see my hands. They are not shaking. They are steady. Too steady.

The bird is sleeping.

That's what I tell myself.

That's what I've always told myself.

But the bird never wakes up.
