The Mirror of Broken Selves
The humidity of the Georgia bayou felt like a wet shroud, smelling of sulfur and decayed magnolia. Elias lived in a house that leaned at a precarious angle, filled with clocks that ticked in reverse and mirrors that didn't reflect the present. He was a dealer in "Lost Things," but his most prized possession was the Silver Glass.
The Glass didn't show the future; it showed the "Almost." With a touch, Elias could step into a fragment of a parallel life. He could be the son who didn't disappoint, the lover who didn't betray, the man who had stayed in the town instead of fleeing in the middle of the night twenty years ago.
But the Glass had a hunger. To stay in a fragment, Elias had to leave a piece of his own memory behind.
At first, it was trivial. He forgot the name of a childhood dog, the taste of a specific brand of tea. In exchange, he gained the skills of a master pianist from World B and the political cunning of a senator from World C. He became a polymath of the void, a man of a thousand talents and zero history.
He began to "edit" his life. He would jump into a world, steal a moment of happiness, and graft it onto his own. He built a persona of perfection, a facade of a gentleman scholar that captivated the town. But beneath the surface, Elias was becoming a hollow shell.
One evening, he looked into the Silver Glass and didn't recognize the man staring back. The reflection was a flickering montage of a dozen different faces, none of them truly his. He tried to remember his mother's voice, but all he heard was a static noise, a chorus of a thousand different mothers from a thousand different worlds.
He had traded his soul for a collection of highlights.
In a fit of rage and terror, Elias smashed the mirror. But the shards didn't fall; they floated, each one reflecting a different version of his current agony. He realized that he was no longer a single entity, but a shattered prism. He was every version of himself that had ever failed, all screaming in unison within the confines of one broken body.
He sat in the mud of the bayou, surrounded by the glittering shards of his existence, and waited for the tide to come in and wash away the fragments of the man he had tried so hard to invent.
