The Ledger of the Gilded Soul

Samuel was a man who viewed the afterlife not as a place of judgment, but as a market. In the sprawling, neon-lit metropolis of the Post-Existence Exchange, souls were the primary currency, and "Virtue Points" were the gold standard. Samuel was a top-tier broker, a man who could turn a bankrupt sinner into a saint for the right commission.

He had discovered a systemic flaw in the "Atonement Protocols." The system rewarded "Consistent Spiritual Discipline," which it defined as the repetitive recitation of sacred texts. To the naive, this was a path to enlightenment. To Samuel, it was a low-cost, high-yield investment.

He established a network of "Prayer-Farms" in the lower rings of the afterlife—thousands of low-tier souls who were paid in meager rations to recite mantras on behalf of his wealthy clients. By the time a client reached the Audit, their ledger was glowing with a fabricated history of piety.

Samuel's most prized client was a former warlord, a man whose hands were stained with the blood of thousands. By the time of the final review, the warlord's "Atonement Score" was higher than that of most actual saints.

"It's just arithmetic," Samuel would tell his associates, leaning back in his obsidian chair. "The system doesn't measure the heart; it measures the data. And I control the data."

But the Exchange was governed by a hidden algorithm—the "Law of True Resonance." It didn't just count the repetitions; it measured the frequency of the intent behind them.

During the Great Audit of the century, the algorithm updated.

In a single heartbeat, the "Prayer-Farm" credits were reclassified as "Synthetic Virtue." The bubble burst. Thousands of "saints" were suddenly stripped of their immunity, their ledgers turning a violent, accusing red.

Samuel watched from his balcony as the city below erupted into chaos. The warlord, and a thousand others like him, were dragged screaming into the Pyres of Truth.

Samuel didn't panic. He had already hedged his bets. He had transferred his own points into a series of complex spiritual derivatives, hiding his identity behind a dozen shell-souls.

He thought he was safe.

But as he reached for his glass of distilled euphoria, he noticed a small, red notification on his screen.

*Audit Pending: Broker Samuel. Charge: Market Manipulation of the Divine.*

The door to his office vanished, replaced by a wall of white fire. Samuel realized too late that in a market where the currency is the soul, the house always wins.
