The Echo of the Broken Mirror

Eric lived in a world of velvet and silence. His penthouse overlooked the city, a glittering hive of activity that he viewed with a mixture of fascination and disgust. He was a collector of "Perfect Moments"—rare artifacts, extinct butterflies, and the whispered secrets of dying men. He believed that by possessing the essence of things, he could transcend the decay of time.

But Eric had a secret. In the deepest part of his mind, there was a room he never entered. It was a room filled with the ghosts of everyone he had stepped on to reach the top.

When the stroke hit, it was as if a curtain had been drawn across his life.

He awoke in a landscape that looked like a distorted version of his own home. The walls were made of frozen screams, and the floor was a mosaic of broken mirrors. In the center of the room sat a book, bound in human skin, titled *The Ledger of the Unsaid*.

"Read," a voice commanded. It was his own voice, but stripped of all its elegance, leaving only a raw, guttural rasp.

Eric opened the book. He found a section dedicated to "The Ritual of Forgiveness." It claimed that if one could recite the names of their victims with genuine remorse, the mirrors would clear, and the path to the Light would open.

For what felt like centuries, Eric read. He recited the names. He wept. He begged for mercy. He used every trick of rhetoric he had ever learned to convince the void that he was sorry.

And for a while, it worked. The mirrors began to shine. The screams in the walls faded into a soft hum. He felt a warmth spreading through his chest—a sense of lightness, of absolution.

"I am saved," he whispered.

But then, he reached the final page.

The final page was a mirror. As he looked into it, he didn't see the refined, repentant man he had imagined. He saw a parasite. He saw that his "remorse" was just another collection—a way to possess the feeling of being forgiven without actually changing. He had treated the Ritual of Forgiveness as just another artifact to be mastered.

The warmth in his chest suddenly turned into a freezing cold.

The mirrors around him didn't just shatter; they imploded. The fragments flew inward, piercing his consciousness. The "Forgiveness" he had felt was revealed to be a psychological lure, a final cruelty designed to bring the ego to its highest point before the fall.

The screams returned, but this time, they weren't in the walls. They were coming from inside him.

Eric realized that the book hadn't been a way out. It had been a mirror that reflected his own narcissism back at him, amplified a thousand times. He had tried to "collect" salvation, and in doing so, he had ensured that he would never find it.

He fell back into the velvet silence, but this time, the silence was hungry.
