The castle of Blackwood clung to the cliffside like a dying parasite, its spires piercing a sky the color of a bruised plum. Inside the Great Hall, the only light came from a circle of black candles that bled wax onto the cold stone floor.

Lord Alistair sat in a high-backed chair of carved ebony, his pale skin almost translucent in the flickering light. Across from him, Julian knelt, the scent of iron and incense filling his lungs. Between them sat a silver chalice filled with a thick, crimson liquid that shimmered with an unnatural light.

"Do you feel it, Julian?" Alistair's voice was a silken thread, weaving through the silence. "The pulse of the house? The way the walls remember every scream they've ever absorbed?"

Julian tried to keep his gaze fixed on the chalice. "I feel only the cold, my Lord."

"Liar," Alistair whispered, and the word seemed to echo from the shadows of the vaulted ceiling. "You feel the hunger. The same hunger that drove your ancestors to this valley. You didn't come here for the inheritance. You came for the Secret."

Alistair leaned forward, his eyes reflecting the black flames of the candles. "The Secret is not a word or a book. It is a state of being. It is the moment when you realize that the monster you've been running from is actually the only part of you that is honest."

Julian felt a sudden, oppressive weight on his chest, as if the castle itself were leaning in to listen. The crimson liquid in the chalice began to ripple, though there was no wind.

"Drink," Alistair commanded. "Drink and let the mask dissolve. Let me see the thing that hides behind your polite smiles and your curated grief."

As Julian reached for the cup, he saw a reflection in the liquid—not his own face, but a distorted, screaming version of himself, its eyes void of light. He realized then that the ritual wasn't about power or magic; it was a mirror. Alistair wasn't testing his loyalty; he was harvesting his fear.

Julian drank, and as the metallic taste filled his mouth, he felt the walls of the castle begin to breathe. He had entered the house as a guest, but as the crimson liquid burned in his throat, he realized he was now part of the architecture.
