The Millionth Iteration

There is no clock here. There is no sun, no wind, and no memory of a beginning. There is only the White—an endless, sterile expanse of nothingness—and Me.

I am the Recorder. Or perhaps I am the Creator. The titles lose meaning when you have spent an eternity in the silence.

My task is simple: I must build a world.

I reach into the void and pull out the constants. Gravity: 9.81 m/s². Oxygen: 21%. Carbon: 0.04%. I weave them together, stitching the fabric of space-time with a needle made of pure thought. I spark the first star, and I watch as the dust coalesces into spheres of rock and ice.

I watch the first cells divide. I watch the first fish crawl onto the shore. I watch the first cities rise from the mud.

It is a magnificent process. It is a symphony of biology and physics. And then, as always, it ends.

In the 45th iteration, the sun expanded too quickly, incinerating the atmosphere in a flash of gold. In the 112th iteration, the gravity was too strong, crushing the mountains into flat plates of obsidian. In the 890th iteration, the creatures evolved too fast, consuming all the oxygen in a century of gluttony.

I do not feel sadness. I only feel a clinical curiosity. I adjust the parameters. I tweak the constants. I try again.

Iteration 1,000,000.

I spent a long time on this one. I balanced the tides. I perfected the orbit. I created a species called 'Humans', and I gave them something I had never tried before: a deep, intuitive sense of longing.

I watched them build a civilization of breathtaking beauty. They wrote poetry about the stars. They painted murals of the void. They loved each other with a ferocity that almost made me forget my own solitude.

I felt a surge of hope. Perhaps this was it. Perhaps this was the version that would last.

But then, I noticed a pattern.

I looked at the ruins of the 1,000,000th world and compared them to the ruins of the 1st. The same cracks in the crust. The same frequency of the final scream. The same precise moment when the first city fell.

I realized that I wasn't creating different worlds. I was just recreating the same tragedy over and over again, with slightly different colors. The longing I had given the humans wasn't a gift; it was a symptom. They were longing for the end, because the end was the only thing that was truly consistent in the universe.

I stood in the center of the White, looking at the dead cinder of my millionth attempt.

I reached for the constants. I thought about changing the gravity again, or perhaps the oxygen. But then I stopped.

I lay down in the nothingness and closed my eyes. For the first time in a million lifetimes, I decided to let the silence win.
