The Glass Handshake

The penthouse office overlooked Manhattan like a throne of glass and steel. Julian sat across from Marcus, the silence between them a living thing, taut and vibrating. On the mahogany table lay a single folder: the blueprints for the Neo-Tokyo merger.

To the outside world, they were the "Golden Duo," the consultants who could save any failing empire. To each other, they were predators who had learned to smile.

"It's a bold move, Marcus," Julian said, his voice as smooth as a polished stone. "The integration of the AI logistics hub is a masterstroke. Truly."

Marcus smiled, but the expression didn't reach his eyes. "I knew you'd appreciate the elegance of it, Julian. We've always had a knack for seeing the invisible threads."

The "invisible threads" were currently being pulled by two different intelligence agencies. Julian was working for the Ministry of Trade; Marcus was a deep-cover asset for the Syndicate. The merger wasn't about business; it was a Trojan horse designed to crash the Japanese market and trigger a controlled collapse.

The problem was, neither of them knew that the other knew.

For three weeks, they had traveled together—Tokyo, Singapore, Seoul—performing a choreographed dance of friendship and professional respect. They shared expensive whiskies and talked about their childhoods, each weaving a web of carefully curated lies.

"I remember you mentioning your father's bookstore in Vermont," Julian remarked, leaning back. "A quaint notion. The death of the physical page."

"Indeed," Marcus replied. "Though some things are better preserved in ink than in a cloud."

The subtext was a scream. Marcus was telling Julian that he had found the physical files Julian had tried to delete from the server. Julian's response was a slight tilt of the head—a signal that he had already replaced those files with a logic bomb that would erase Marcus's identity the moment he tried to upload them.

It was a game of chicken played at ten thousand feet.

As they stood to shake hands, the tension reached a breaking point. The handshake was firm, a perfect professional gesture. But as their palms met, Julian felt a small, sharp prick in his thumb.

A micro-transmitter.

Marcus had just tagged him.

"Safe travels, Julian," Marcus said, his smile widening. "I have a feeling this project is going to be... transformative."

Julian watched him leave, then looked at his thumb. He didn't panic. He simply walked to the window and looked down at the teeming streets of New York. He had already sent the signal. In ten minutes, Marcus's bank accounts would be frozen, his passports revoked, and his "handlers" would find him to be a liability.

The merger would go through. The market would crash. And Julian would be the only one left standing in the ruins, holding the keys to the kingdom.

He poured himself a drink and toasted the empty room.

"To friendship," he whispered. "The most expensive lie of all."
