The Infinite Room

The Hotel Ouroboros had no lobby, no exit, and no clocks. It had only corridors that smelled of old cinnamon and a single, ornate mirror in every room. The Guest had lived here for what felt like a thousand years, though according to the calendar he kept in his head, it had only been Tuesday.

The Guest was a master of the Loop. He had discovered that by standing in front of the mirror at exactly 11:11 PM and whispering a specific sequence of prime numbers, he could reset the day. He had used this power to perfect every conversation, to taste every delicacy, to avoid every mistake. He believed he had cheated death, achieving a secular immortality through the art of the redo.

But the Loop had a tax.

In the beginning, the losses were small. He forgot the name of his first-grade teacher. Then, he forgot the scent of rain. By the ten-thousandth loop, he realized he could no longer remember the face of the woman he had once loved. Every time he reset the day, a piece of his emotional architecture was deleted to make room for the new iteration.

He became a ghost of a man, a collection of habits without a heart. He was immortal, yes, but he was also empty. He was a library where all the books had been bleached white.

One Tuesday, he decided to stop. He stood before the mirror at 11:11 PM, but instead of the sequence, he whispered a question: "Who am I?"

The mirror did not reset. Instead, it cracked. The crack spread across the ceiling and the floor, and for the first time, The Guest saw the truth. The Hotel was not a place, but a parasite. It fed on the identity of its guests, offering them a fake eternity in exchange for their essence. He wasn't a god of time; he was a battery.

As the room began to dissolve into a grey void, The Guest felt a sudden, sharp surge of terror. It was the first thing he had felt in centuries. He welcomed it. He clung to the terror as if it were a lifeline, because it was the only thing that proved he was still human.

He watched as his hands began to fade, turning into the same grey mist as the walls. He didn't try to reset. He didn't try to fight. He simply closed his eyes and waited for the silence to finally become permanent.
