The Etiquette of Ruin

The "Symmetry Club" was the most exclusive underground society in New York. Its members didn't value money or power; they valued Precision. Everything in the club—from the angle of the napkins to the timing of the breaths—was governed by a set of rules so complex they bordered on the religious.

Felix was the club's laziest perfectionist. He was a man who could spend three hours deciding which fountain pen to use for a grocery list. He didn't care about the club's philosophy, but he loved the rules.

The club's leader, The Maestro, was a man who had taken Precision to a pathological extreme. He had captured a woman named Sonia and placed her in a "Living Gallery." Sonia was required to stand in a specific, mathematically perfect pose for sixteen hours a day. If she shifted her weight by a single millimeter, the Maestro would "correct" her with a precise, calculated strike.

Felix visited the gallery and was horrified. Not by the cruelty, but by the Maestro's lack of symmetry. The Maestro had placed Sonia's pedestal three inches too far to the left of the room's central axis.

"It's an abomination," Felix whispered.

He didn't rescue Sonia out of compassion. He rescued her because the room was wrong.

Felix spent a week studying the Maestro's own rules. He discovered that the Maestro's obsession with precision was his only weakness. Felix began to leave "corrections" around the club—a misplaced chair here, a slightly tilted painting there. He created a psychological environment of mounting asymmetry that drove the Maestro into a state of manic agitation.

The climax occurred during the Autumn Equinox Gala. Felix managed to trick the Maestro into a laбириynth of his own making, where every turn was slightly off-center. The Maestro, unable to handle the visual dissonance, suffered a complete nervous breakdown. He began to scream, trying to "straighten" the world with his bare hands, until he collapsed in a fit of catatonic shock.

Felix walked over to Sonia and gently moved her pedestal three inches to the right.

"There," he said. "Now it's perfect."

Sonia looked at him, her eyes vacant. She was free from the Maestro, but as she looked at Felix, who was now obsessively adjusting the fold of her dress, she realized she had simply moved from one kind of madness to another.
