The Rain of Los Angeles

The rain in LA doesn't wash anything away; it just turns the grime into a slick, black mirror. I sat in my car, the windshield wipers fighting a losing battle against the deluge, watching the neon sign of a dive bar flicker in the dark.

I used to have a badge. I used to have a desk at the precinct and a sense that the law meant something. Then came the 'incident'—a case of misplaced evidence and a captain who needed a scapegoat. Now, I was just Frank, a man with a bottle of rye in the glove box and a hole in his soul where his career used to be.

I drove to the outskirts, to a small, nondescript clinic run by Leo. Leo was a doctor who had seen too many war zones and decided that the only way to survive the world was to stop fighting it.

"You're shaking, Frank," Leo said, gesturing to a worn leather chair in his office. The room smelled of eucalyptus and old paper.

"I'm not shaking," I lied. "I'm vibrating with the urge to punch something."

Leo didn't judge. He spent the next hour talking to me about 'the art of letting go.' He told me about a dream he'd had—a dream where he flew above the city, leaving the smog and the sirens behind, landing in a place of absolute silence. "The secret, Frank, is to stop trying to fix a broken world and start fixing the broken man inside you."

For a few weeks, I tried. I followed Leo's lead. I practiced the stillness. I stopped checking the police scanners. I started to believe that maybe, just maybe, I could find a version of peace that didn't require a bottle.

But the problem with the past is that it has a very long memory.

One night, as I was leaving the clinic, a black sedan pulled up beside me. The window rolled down, revealing a face from a case I thought I'd buried ten years ago. He didn't say a word; he just showed me a photograph of my sister, taken an hour ago, walking her dog in the park.

The 'peace' Leo had taught me vanished in a heartbeat. I realized that in a city like this, letting go isn't a spiritual victory—it's a tactical error. By abandoning my defenses, I had simply made myself an easier target.

I looked at Leo, who was watching me from the doorway with a look of profound pity. I realized then that his dream of flying away was a luxury for people who didn't have enemies. For men like me, there is no sky, only the rain and the concrete.

I reached into the glove box, gripped the cold steel of my .38, and drove back into the neon dark.
