The Parasitic Echo

The town of Oakhaven was a place where the rain never truly stopped. It was a grey, sodden landscape of cedar shingles and salt-stained piers, where the residents lived in a state of perpetual, low-level anxiety. They called it "The Damp," a local superstition about the things that lived in the mist.

Arthur was one of those things.

He looked like a man in his late forties, with a tired face and eyes that seemed to hold the depth of an ocean trench. But Arthur was not a man. He was a biological echo, a remnant of a human who had undergone a catastrophic mutation during a deep-sea diving accident decades ago. He survived, but he had become a parasitic entity, tied to the water.

Every ten years, Arthur's internal pressure would reach a critical point, forcing him to manifest in the physical world for one month. He needed human contact—not for love, but for stability. He needed to anchor his consciousness to another living soul, or he would dissolve into a mindless slurry of organic matter.

But there was a cost.

The anchor did not survive the process. Slowly, invisibly, Arthur would drain the vitality from whoever he bonded with. He didn't do it consciously; it was a biological imperative, a hunger that bypassed his will.

This time, the anchor was Sarah, a lonely librarian who had spent her life reading about adventures she would never have. Arthur approached her with a gentle kindness, a soft-spoken charm that masked the void within him. For three weeks, they were inseparable. They walked the rainy beaches, talked about the books they loved, and shared a quiet, desperate intimacy.

Sarah bloomed under his attention. She felt seen, felt loved, for the first time in her life.

But as the month drew to a close, the change became apparent. Sarah grew pale. Her voice became a whisper. Her eyes lost their luster, becoming as dull as the Oakhaven sky. She was fading, her life force being pulled into the vacuum of Arthur's existence.

Arthur saw it. He felt the surge of energy entering him, the strength returning to his limbs, the clarity returning to his mind. And he hated it.

He loved Sarah—or as close to love as a parasite could get. He realized that his existence was a zero-sum game. For him to live, she had to die.

On the final night, as the rain turned into a torrential downpour, Arthur stood by the pier. Sarah was leaning against him, her breathing shallow, her skin translucent.

"I'm so tired, Arthur," she whispered.

He didn't answer. He couldn't. He simply stepped away from her, breaking the bond with a violent, psychic snap. He felt the energy leave him, the strength draining away, the coldness of the deep returning to claim him.

He walked into the crashing waves of the Atlantic, not with a sense of peace, but with a crushing guilt. He sank into the dark, the pressure of the ocean finally matching the pressure in his chest. He would sleep for another ten years, dreaming of a woman who had loved a monster, and praying that when he woke up, he would finally be dead.
