The Purge of the Saints

Washington D.C. in August is a swamp of heat and secrets. Elias Thorne stood in the dim light of the National Cathedral, looking at the casket of Senator Julian Vane. To the public, Vane was a champion of the people. To Elias, he was a liability that had finally been liquidated.

The funeral was attended by the entire political establishment—the men and women who had spent their careers climbing over the bodies of others. They were all there, wearing their best suits and their most sincere masks.

Elias stepped to the podium. He didn't look at the crowd; he looked at the casket.

"Julian was a man of immense talent," Elias began, his voice a smooth, dangerous velvet. "He had a gift for finding the gaps in the law, the places where the light didn't reach. He taught me that the only way to truly lead is to know exactly where the bodies are buried."

A subtle ripple of tension went through the front row. The phrasing was too specific.

"He was a man of secrets," Elias continued, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "And as his closest confidant, I spent years helping him guard those secrets. I remember a particular evening in October, three years ago, in a small hotel in Zurich... a conversation about certain 'contributions' from the energy sector."

The color drained from the face of the Secretary of State. The Senator from Ohio suddenly found his tie very interesting.

Elias wasn't delivering a eulogy; he was delivering a list. Every phrase, every anecdote, every "fond memory" was a coded signal. He was telling every person in that room that he knew exactly what they had done, and that the only reason they were still breathing was because he allowed it.

"Julian's passing is a tragedy," Elias concluded, looking directly into the eyes of the most powerful man in the room. "But it is also an opportunity. An opportunity for us to start fresh. To be honest. To be... compliant."

As he stepped down, the applause was hesitant, almost fearful. The air in the cathedral had changed. The grief was gone, replaced by a cold, paralyzing terror.

Elias walked out into the blinding August sun, the smile on his face a thin, sharp blade. He had used the dead man as a battering ram to break the doors of the establishment. He hadn't just buried a rival; he had crowned himself the new king of the swamp.
