The Crimson Gallery

The forest of Blackwood did not obey the laws of nature; it obeyed the laws of grief. Julian walked through the silver-barked trees, carrying a mirror wrapped in heavy velvet. The mirror was not a tool for vanity, but a prison for a soul that had been shattered into a thousand jagged pieces.

Julian was a painter who had lost the ability to see color. The world was a smudge of grey and charcoal, except for the mirror. When he unwrapped it, the mirror bled a deep, visceral crimson that stained the air.

To reach the Altar of the Void, Julian had to pass through five shrines of the forest. At the first shrine, he was met by a figure that looked like his own father, but with eyes that were nothing more than empty sockets. The figure didn't attack with a blade, but with a memory—the sound of a door closing for the last time, the smell of old lilies. Julian didn't fight the memory; he painted it. He used the crimson blood of the mirror to sketch the grief onto the altar. As the painting finished, the figure dissolved into a swarm of black butterflies.

The second and third shrines were tests of longing and guilt. He faced a version of himself that had never left home, and a version that had succeeded in saving the woman he loved. Each encounter was a visceral, poetic struggle. He fought them not with strength, but by incorporating their pain into his gallery. By the time he reached the fourth shrine, Julian's skin was stained with the crimson ink of the mirror, and his mind was a kaleidoscope of other people's tragedies.

The final shrine was a mirror-pool of still, black water. There stood the final guard—a reflection of Julian as he was now: a hollow man, a vessel for a thousand sorrows.

"You think you are the artist," the reflection whispered, "but you are only the canvas."

Julian looked at the mirror in his hands. He realized that the soul he was escorting was not a stranger's, but his own. The mirror was not a prison for another; it was the only place where his true self still existed.

He didn't break the mirror. He didn't try to escape. Instead, he stepped into the pool, merging with his reflection. The crimson color exploded, filling the forest, turning the grey trees into a vibrant, bleeding garden.

As he vanished into the water, the forest of Blackwood finally fell silent. The gallery was complete.
