The Last Bastion of Honor

The empire was not falling; it was evaporating. The cities were empty shells, the roads were reclaimed by the forest, and the only thing left of the Great Hegemony was a handful of soldiers who still remembered how to salute.

Captain Valerius was one of them. He wore the gold-trimmed cloak of the Imperial Guard, though the gold had long since faded to a dull brown. Beside him was Julian, a young diplomat who carried the Treaty of Solace—the only document that could prevent the final, bloody collapse of the remaining provinces.

Valerius's mission was simple: escort Julian to the capital. But the road was blocked by five fortresses, each held by a different warlord who had once been a brother-in-arms.

The first fortress, Oakhaven, was held by General Marcus. They had fought side-by-side for a decade in the northern wastes. When they met on the bridge, Marcus didn't offer a greeting; he offered a choice: join the new order or die. Valerius didn't choose. He fought. He fought with a precision that was almost poetic, a dance of steel and blood. He killed Marcus not out of hate, but out of a profound, heartbreaking necessity.

By the fourth fortress, Valerius was a man of scars and silence. He had lost his horse, his sword was notched, and his cloak was torn. But his resolve was a diamond. He saw the way Julian looked at him—with a mixture of awe and horror. Julian was learning that honor was not a set of rules, but a willingness to suffer for something that no longer existed.

The final gate was the Capital's Great Arch. The city was burning, the sky a canopy of ash. Valerius fought through the final wave of rebels, his body a map of agony. He pushed Julian through the gates and into the hands of the provisional government.

As the gates slammed shut, Julian turned to look back.

"Come in, Valerius! You've saved us!"

Valerius stood in the rain of ash, his sword broken in his hand. He looked at the city he had served, and he saw that the "government" Julian had reached was just another set of traitors, waiting to use the treaty to secure their own power.

He didn't try to enter. He didn't try to warn them. He simply turned around and walked back into the fire, facing the oncoming army alone. He didn't fight to win; he fought to ensure that the last man of the Empire died with his boots on and his honor intact.
