The Mountain and the Mirror

The first time I saw Leo, he was standing in the middle of a highway in Nevada, the heat haze shimmering around him like a halo of gasoline. He didn't speak. He didn't smile. He just took my hand and led me into the back of a black SUV.

I was Sarah, a witness to a crime that the government wanted to erase. Leo was the man hired to make sure I reached the safehouse in Oregon. For the next two weeks, I lived in the shadow of a mountain.

Leo was a machine. That's how I described him in my journal. He didn't eat much, he didn't sleep, and he fought with a terrifying, silent efficiency. We were hunted by five different teams of mercenaries. Each time they found us, Leo would step forward, a wall of muscle and scarred skin, and simply... remove them.

I watched him from the car, from the bushes, from the corners of cheap motels. I saw the way he checked the perimeter every ten minutes. I saw the way he held his rifle, not as a tool, but as an extension of his own arm. He was a monster, I told myself. A beautiful, lethal monster.

But then, there were the gaps.

In a small town in Idaho, we stopped at a diner. While I was eating, I saw Leo stop by a small, stray dog shivering in the rain. He didn't say a word, but he reached into his pocket and gave the dog a piece of his sandwich, his fingers surprisingly gentle.

Later, in the quiet of the desert, I saw him staring at a faded photograph of a woman and a child. He didn't cry, but his shoulders slumped, and for a moment, the mountain looked fragile.

"Who were they?" I asked.

He didn't answer. He just checked the perimeter again.

The final ambush happened at the border. The mercenaries had us pinned down in a canyon. Leo didn't tell me to hide; he told me to run for the extraction point. He stood his ground in the center of the road, a lone figure against a dozen rifles.

I ran, but I kept looking back. I saw him taking hits, his body jerking with the impact, but he never fell. He was fighting not for a paycheck, or for the government, but for the only thing he had left in the world: a promise to keep me safe.

When I finally reached the safehouse, the agents told me that Leo had been killed in the crossfire. They said he was a "disposable asset."

I opened my journal and looked at the sketches I had made of him. I didn't see a monster anymore. I saw a man who had spent his whole life in the dark, just so that people like me could walk in the light.
