Shadow of the Hero

The office was a box of shadows and cigarette smoke, illuminated only by the neon sign of the diner across the street, which flickered in a rhythmic, sickly pink. I sat behind my desk, the fan overhead chopping the air into stale slices.

The man sitting across from me called himself Colonel Vance. He looked the part—broad shoulders, a jaw like a granite block, and eyes that had seen too much of the world's ugliness. He had come to me to find a missing ledger, but he spent the first hour telling me about the 'Battle of the Ridge.'

"I was the only one who held the line," Vance said, his voice a gravelly rumble. "The enemy had us outnumbered ten to one. My sergeant was dead, my radio was smashed, and the rain was turning the trenches into a graveyard of mud. I stood my ground for six hours. When the reinforcements finally arrived, they found me standing on a pile of brass casings, the only man left breathing."

I watched him. I'd seen this movie before. The hero's journey, the lone survivor, the burden of glory. It was a beautiful story, the kind that gets you a pension and a parade.

But I'm a private investigator. My job isn't to listen to stories; it's to find the holes in them.

Two days into the case, I found a veteran's archive in a dusty basement in Long Beach. I found the after-action report for the Battle of the Ridge. The report didn't mention a heroic stand. It mentioned a 'command failure.' It described how a certain officer had ordered a premature charge into a kill zone, resulting in the deaths of forty-two men. The officer had survived because he had been the last one to leave the trench, retreating while his men were still screaming for help.

The officer's name was Vance.

When I met him again in that smoke-filled office, I didn't tell him I knew. I just watched him light another cigarette, the flame illuminating the hollows of his cheeks.

"You're a good man, Colonel," I said, the irony tasting like copper in my mouth. "The world needs heroes."

Vance smiled, but the smile didn't reach his eyes. His eyes were two black holes, swallowing everything around them. He believed his own lie now. He had to. Because the alternative was to realize that he wasn't a hero—he was just a survivor who had traded forty-two lives for a few medals and a comfortable retirement.

I took his money, found his ledger, and walked out into the rain. In this city, the truth doesn't set you free; it just gives you a better reason to keep drinking.
