The Price of a Second

The rain in New York didn't wash things clean; it only turned the grime into a slick, black mirror. Elias Vance sat in the back of a dimly lit diner, the smell of burnt coffee and old grease clinging to his skin like a second layer of clothing.

He had the gift—or the curse. Every morning at 6:00 AM, Elias saw a flickering montage of the next twenty-four hours. He saw the stock market dips, the sudden accidents, the whispered secrets of politicians. He had used it to climb. He had traded a few seconds of foresight for millions of dollars, and a few hours of manipulation for a seat at the table of the city's most powerful men.

But the universe kept a strict ledger.

He looked at the photograph in his wallet. Sarah. She had been the only thing in his life that wasn't a transaction. She had loved him before the money, before the power, before the coldness had settled into his marrow.

Three years ago, Elias had seen a vision of a corporate merger that would make him a billionaire. To ensure it happened, he had to nudge a few events, change a few conversations. He had won. The merger went through. He became the king of the hill.

And that afternoon, Sarah had walked into a crosswalk and been struck by a driver who had run a red light.

It wasn't an accident. It was a payment.

Elias had tried to fight it. He had spent millions on doctors, on security, on every precaution imaginable. But the "Payment" always found its way. The more he changed the world to suit his desires, the more the world took from his heart. His best friend had vanished in a mysterious fire; his sister had succumbed to a sudden, inexplicable illness.

Now, he was the most powerful man in the city, and he was utterly alone.

He checked his watch. 3:14 AM. In two hours, the new vision would arrive. He knew what it would show. He had seen the pattern. The higher he climbed, the steeper the price.

He looked out the window at the neon lights of Times Square, blurring in the rain. He had a choice. He could stop using the gift, live a quiet, unremarkable life, and perhaps save the few people he had left. Or he could take one last gamble, one final push for absolute control.

He reached for his phone to make the call that would seal his destiny. As he dialed, he felt a familiar, cold void opening in his chest. He didn't know who he was about to lose this time, but he knew the price would be paid in full.

He pressed 'call' and waited for the silence to swallow him.
