The Neon Ledger

The rain in Los Angeles doesn't wash anything away; it just moves the filth from one alley to another. I was nursing a lukewarm coffee in a diner that smelled of burnt grease and regret when Lana walked in. She looked like a million dollars, but the kind of million that had been spent on bad bets and cheap gin.

She sat across from me, her eyes scanning the room with the instinct of a hunted animal.

"I heard you're the kind of guy who finds things that want to stay lost, Jack," she said.

I leaned back, the vinyl of the booth sticking to my shirt. "Depends on who's paying and how much they're willing to lie to me. What's your story, Lana?"

Lana didn't give me a story; she gave me a confession. She had been the crown jewel of the city's social scene, a woman whose name was whispered in the halls of power. But the power had a price. She had been a pawn in a game played by men with senators' titles and killers' hearts.

"They didn't just take my money, Jack," she whispered, her voice trembling. "They took my identity. They framed me for a crime I didn't commit, wiped my records, and sold my debts to a man who likes to collect in blood."

As we talked, the pieces of the puzzle began to fit. Lana's fall wasn't a simple bankruptcy; it was a surgical removal. She had seen something she wasn't supposed to see—a ledger of bribes and payoffs that reached the Mayor's office. To silence her, they hadn't killed her; they had simply deleted her from the world of the living.

"I'm a ghost, Jack. A ghost with a very expensive taste in jewelry that I can no longer afford."

I looked at her and felt a flicker of something that might have been pity if I hadn't drowned it in bourbon years ago. She was a high-stakes player who had been played.

"I can try to find the ledger," I told her. "But fair warning: in this town, the truth doesn't set you free. It just gives you a better view of the gallows."

Lana smiled, a cold, hard expression. "I've already been to the gallows, Jack. I'm just looking for a way to bring the rest of them down with me."
