The Eye in the Wall

I spent twelve hours a day in a room that smelled of ozone and stale coffee, staring at a grid of sixteen monitors. My job was simple: watch the corridors of the Apex Corporation and report any "anomalies." I was a ghost in the machine, a man whose only interaction with the world was through a lens.

On Tuesday, at 3:14 AM, the anomaly arrived.

Monitor 4 showed the basement parking garage. Kael, the Head of Security—a man known for his surgical precision and absolute loyalty to the board—had intercepted the former CEO, Marcus Thorne.

Thorne had been ousted in a bloody boardroom coup three months ago. He was now a fugitive, wanted for corporate espionage. I watched as Kael pinned him against a concrete pillar, his arm locked in a professional chokehold.

I leaned in, my headset amplifying the audio.

"It's over, Marcus," Kael's voice was a cold blade. "The board wants you erased. No trial, no scandal. Just a disappearance."

Thorne didn't struggle. He just laughed—a thin, desperate sound that echoed through the garage. "Erasure? Is that what they call it now? We built this empire together, Kael. I gave you your career. I gave you your house in the Hamptons."

"You gave me a paycheck," Kael replied.

I waited for the blow. I waited for the sound of a gunshot or the snap of a bone. But then, something happened that wasn't in the security manual.

Kael loosened his grip. He stepped back, his expression unreadable.

"Go," Kael whispered. "The service exit on the north side is unlocked. You have ten minutes before the next patrol arrives."

Thorne stared at him, bewildered. Then, he turned and sprinted into the darkness.

I sat back in my chair, the blue light of the monitors reflecting in my glasses. I felt a surge of nausea. I had just witnessed an act of mercy from the most ruthless man in the building. But as I looked at the screen, I realized the horror of it.

Kael wasn't being kind. He was being strategic. By letting Thorne go, he had created a debt that could never be repaid. He had turned the former CEO into his personal asset, a ghost who would now owe him his life.

In the world of Apex, mercy wasn't a virtue. It was just a more sophisticated form of ownership. I reached for my coffee, the liquid tasting like ash.
