The Boardroom Frost

The 42nd floor of the Sterling Tower was a tomb of chrome and obsidian. Outside, a historic blizzard had paralyzed New York, turning the skyline into a series of ghostly monoliths. Inside, the heating system had failed, and the temperature was dropping with a clinical precision.

Marcus and Sarah sat at the mahogany conference table, the only two people left in the building. They were the survivors of a corporate purge that had gutted the firm in a single afternoon. The silence was absolute, broken only by the distant, rhythmic thumping of a loose vent.

On the table sat a tray of lukewarm catering—miniature quiches and soggy sliders.

"Let's play a game," Marcus said, his voice as cold as the air. He pointed to a shriveled slider. "This one is 'The CEO's Betrayal'. Greasy, disappointing, and ultimately toxic. Much like the way he looked us in the eye and promised tenure while he was signing our termination papers."

Sarah didn't smile. She looked at him with eyes that had seen too many spreadsheets and too few souls. She pointed to a piece of wilted lettuce. "And this is 'The Board's Mercy'. Small, fragile, and completely tasteless. It's the kind of mercy that leaves you starving while they tell you that you're lucky to have a seat at the table."

The game was not about humor; it was a probe. Every "name" was a test of loyalty, a hint at what the other knew about the offshore accounts. The irony was their only weapon in a room where the air was running out. They were no longer colleagues; they were two predators trapped in a freezing cage, calculating the cost of the other's survival.

"You still have the encryption key, don't you, Sarah?" Marcus asked, the mask of the game slipping. "The one that unlocks the Cayman files. The one that could turn this frost into a tropical vacation."

Sarah leaned back, the cold seeping into her bones. "I have enough to ensure that 'The Board's Mercy' is the only thing left for you, Marcus. I've already sent a copy to the SEC. I just wanted to see if you'd try to buy me one last time."

They stared at each other, the mahogany table now a border between two warring states. Outside, the snow continued to fall, burying the city and the tower, erasing the evidence of their existence.
