The Geometry of Greed

Maximilian’s penthouse was a temple to the void. White walls, grey floors, and furniture that looked more like sculptures than places to sit. Everything was calculated. Everything was optimized. Maximilian himself was a man of straight lines and zero margins, a hedge fund manager who had turned the volatility of the world into a predictable stream of profit.

Now, the volatility had come for him. A rare, aggressive form of leukemia was dismantling his body with a precision that Maximilian almost admired.

He lay in his ergonomic bed, his breathing assisted by a machine that hummed in a perfect B-flat. He had spent the last month preparing his "Succession Protocol." He had divided his empire into three sectors, assigning each to a protege based on a complex matrix of competence and loyalty. It was, in his mind, a masterpiece of organizational design.

"The transition must be seamless," Maximilian whispered to the room.

His three proteges—Julian, Sarah, and Marcus—were gathered around him. They were wearing suits that cost more than most people's cars, their faces masks of professional grief.

"I have analyzed your trajectories," Maximilian continued, his voice a thin wire. "Julian, you take the Asian markets. Sarah, the European holdings. Marcus, the domestic core. This is the only configuration that ensures the stability of the fund."

The moment the words left his lips, the mask slipped.

"Stability?" Julian snapped. "The Asian markets are a liability, Max. I want the domestic core. I've been the one doing the heavy lifting while Marcus was playing golf in the Hamptons."

"Excuse me?" Marcus retorted, his voice rising. "I built the domestic core from the ground up. You're just a glorified accountant, Julian."

Sarah didn't even pretend to be sad. She was already on her phone, texting her lawyers. "If we can prove Max was mentally incapacitated when he wrote the protocol, we can challenge the entire distribution in court."

Maximilian watched them. He watched the three people he had groomed for a decade descend into a screaming match over the spoils of his death. They weren't discussing the fund; they were dividing the carcass.

He tried to interrupt, to remind them of the "Logic of the System," but a sudden fit of coughing left him gasping for air. He looked up at the ceiling, at the perfect, white, sterile void of his apartment.

He had spent his entire life eliminating risk, calculating every variable, and optimizing every outcome. But he had forgotten to calculate the one thing that cannot be optimized: the bottomless, chaotic hunger of the human ego.

Maximilian closed his eyes. As the shouting continued around him, he felt a sudden, absurd sense of amusement. His life's work was a perfect circle, and he was dying at the exact point where the circle broke.
