The Weight of a Dying Star

I remember the way the light hit the velvet curtains in the drawing room—a dusty, golden hue that seemed to belong to a century that had already given up. My name is Leo, and for five years, I had been the shadow of Julian Vance.

Julian had been the most powerful diplomat in Europe, a man who could stop a war with a single well-placed adjective. But as I watched him in those final weeks, I realized that power is a garment that doesn't fit once you're dying.

He had shrunk. That was the first thing I noticed. The man who had dominated the halls of Versailles now seemed to be disappearing into his own silk pajamas. His voice, which had once commanded the attention of prime ministers, was now a series of fragile whistles.

I spent my days performing the small, indignities of care. I held the basin while he retched; I smoothed the sheets when he thrashed in the grip of a fever; I read the newspapers to him, skipping the parts about the rising unrest in the streets because he couldn't bear the thought of a world that didn't care about his protocols.

One afternoon, he called me to his side. He looked at me with eyes that were cloudy, like marbles dropped in milk.

"Leo," he whispered, "do you think they'll remember the treaties?"

I didn't know how to answer. I thought of the people in the city, the workers in the factories, the students in the cafes. To them, Julian Vance was a name in a textbook, a ghost of a system that was already crumbling.

"I think they'll remember that you were a man of your word, sir," I lied.

He smiled, a small, ghost of a movement. "A man of my word. How quaint."

In those moments, I felt a strange, forbidden intimacy. I saw the tremor in his hands and the terror in his gaze when he looked at the empty corner of the room. I realized that the "Great Man" was just a frightened animal in a fancy room, terrified of the dark.

When the end came, it was unremarkable. There was no grand speech, no final revelation. Just a long, slow exhale and a sudden stillness that felt heavier than the furniture.

I stood there for a long time, looking at the body. I felt a sudden urge to scream, or perhaps to laugh. All that power, all those secrets, all those years of calculating the fate of nations—and in the end, it all came down to a failing heart and a small, quiet room in Vienna.

I walked to the window and opened the curtains. The city was still there, loud and indifferent, moving forward into a future that had no place for men like Julian Vance. I closed the curtains again, leaving him in the gold-dusted silence he had spent his life creating.
