The Gilded Vault

# Style: Hardboiled Detective

The flood didn't just kill people; it uncovered things. In a city like this, the only things that stay buried are the secrets, and the river had just decided to play a game of truth or dare.

I'm Max. I get paid to find people who don't want to be found, and things that should have stayed lost. The city was a swamp of floating trash and dead dreams, and I was navigating it in a flat-bottomed skiff that smelled like a wet dog.

My client was a suit from the North Side. He didn't care about the thousands of corpses floating in the current; he cared about a specific vault in the First National Bank, which was currently submerged under twenty feet of silt. The vault contained a set of ledgers that could bring down half the city council.

"Find the vault, get the books, and you can name your price," he'd told me.

The problem was that I wasn't the only one who had heard about the vault. The flood had turned the city into a free-for-all. Every lowlife and mercenary with a diving suit was hunting for the same prize.

I found the bank's lobby. It was a cathedral of drowned luxury, with chandeliers hanging like frozen jellyfish from the ceiling. I dove into the murky water, my flashlight cutting a weak path through the gloom.

I reached the vault door. It was a massive slab of steel, partially pried open by the pressure of the flood. Inside, the ledgers were floating in a cloud of ink. But as I reached for them, a knife found the gap in my suit.

It was a quick, professional cut. I spun around, my underwater torch illuminating a face I recognized—a former partner who had sold me out five years ago in Macau. We fought in the silence of the deep, a slow-motion dance of bubbles and blood. I managed to jam my flashlight into his throat, and he drifted away, his eyes wide and vacant, becoming just another piece of debris in the flood.

I grabbed the books and surfaced, gasping for air that tasted of salt and rot.

As I climbed back into my skiff, I looked at the ledgers. I could give them to the suit and get rich, or I could leak them to the press and watch the city burn. I thought about the people I'd seen floating in the water on my way in—the nameless, the forgotten, the victims of the very men listed in these books.

I lit a cigarette and looked at the ledgers. Then, I watched as the current pulled a floating child's shoe past my boat.

I opened the books and began to tear the pages out, one by one, letting them flutter into the water like white birds. Some secrets are too heavy to carry, and some debts can only be paid in ink and river water.
