The Last Dirge of the Empire

The Empire did not fall with a bang, but with a slow, silver fade. We were once the masters of a thousand systems, our fleets like glittering clouds that dimmed the light of every sun they approached. Now, we are the ghosts of our own grandeur, clinging to the edges of a dying galaxy.

I am Arthur, the last of the Mirror-Keepers. I live in the ruins of the Great Array, a structure so vast that it takes a lifetime to traverse a single quadrant. My job is to keep the silver skin from tarnishing, though there is no one left to look at it.

I am the curator of a museum of silence.

The Order came to me in the twilight of my life. The High Council—three withered men in robes of synthetic silk—told me that the time had come for the "Primordial Light." They wanted me to pilot the last functioning Mirror-Ship into the heart of the Great Void, to find the spark that could restart the engine of civilization.

I accepted, not because I believed in the mission, but because I had nowhere else to go.

As I sailed away from the ruins of the capital, I used the Mirror to look back. I saw the cities of glass crumbling into dust, the oceans of liquid diamond evaporating into the void. I saw the history of my people—the arrogance of the ascent, the cruelty of the peak, and the patheticness of the fall.

The Mirror became my confessional. I spoke to it of the loves I had lost and the betrayes I had committed. I told it about the smell of the ancient gardens and the sound of the imperial hymns. I realized that the "Primordial Light" was not a physical thing to be found, but a memory to be preserved.

As I approached the event horizon of the Void, the ship began to shudder. The silver skin, once so proud, began to peel away in great, shimmering flakes. I was not finding a new beginning; I was witnessing the final end.

I stood at the prow of the ship, the Mirror reflecting the absolute black of the end. I felt a strange, solemn peace. I was the last note of a long, complex symphony, and it was time for the silence to take over.

I closed my eyes and whispered a prayer for a race that had forgotten how to be humble. Then, I steered the ship into the dark, becoming a single, silver spark that vanished into the eternal night.
