The Gothic Mirror

The *Cathedral of Light* was a blasphemy of architecture, a floating gothic spire of obsidian and silver drifting through the frozen silence of the void. Its halls were lined with weeping gargoyles of cold iron, and its ceilings were vaulted arches that seemed to stretch into an infinite, starless night. Father Thomas walked these corridors with a heavy tread, his black cassock sweeping the polished floors like a funeral shroud.

He had been sent to the Mirror-Station not as a scientist, but as a confessor. The crew, driven mad by the oppressive solitude of the deep, needed a shepherd to guide their souls through the darkness. But Thomas soon discovered that the darkness was not outside the ship; it was woven into the very fabric of the mirrors.

The Great Array was designed to reflect the light of distant suns, but as Thomas spent more time in the Gallery, he realized the mirrors were reflecting something else. They were reflecting the *Sins*.

He would stand before the silver plains and see not the stars, but the ghosts of his own past. He saw the faces of the people he had failed, the secrets he had buried under layers of prayer and penance. The mirrors didn't just show the image; they projected the guilt, amplifying it until it became a physical weight, a crushing pressure that threatened to collapse his lungs.

"The mirror does not lie," the Station Commander had warned him, his eyes sunken and wild. "It shows us the truth of our souls. And the truth is a monster."

Thomas tried to resist. He spent hours in the chapel, chanting psalms to drown out the whispers of the glass. But the mirrors were patient. They began to show him things he had never known—the sins of the other crew members, the hidden cruelties, the secret lusts. He saw the Commander's hidden greed, the engineer's quiet hatred, the doctor's cold indifference.

The ship became a house of mirrors, a labyrinth of psychic torture. The crew turned on each other, driven by the revelations of the glass. They began to see the reflections as demons, as entities that had come to judge them. One by one, they were consumed by their own guilt, some leaping into the void, others carving the "truth" into their own skin.

Finally, Thomas was the only one left.

He walked to the center of the Great Array, the silver surface stretching out like a frozen lake of mercury. He looked into the mirror and saw a figure standing behind him—a towering shadow with eyes like dying stars. It was the sum of all the sins he had witnessed, a composite monster of human failure.

"You cannot escape the reflection," the shadow whispered, its voice a thousand screams muffled by velvet.

Thomas didn't pray. He didn't scream. He took the heavy silver crucifix from his neck and drove it into the center of the mirror. The glass didn't shatter; it opened. A void of absolute blackness swallowed the light, the ship, and the man.

As he fell into the darkness, Thomas felt a sudden, terrifying peace. He was no longer a judge or a priest. He was just another reflection, dissolving into the infinite, silver silence.
