The Species Mirror
The world was a bruised purple, the oceans a thick, metallic grey. I am the last Archivist of the Seventh Era, living in a spire of obsidian that overlooks the ruins of a city whose name has been forgotten by the wind.
For ten thousand years, my order has guarded the "Species Mirror," a machine that simulates the entire evolutionary history of the human race. It is not a record of what happened, but a map of the mathematical inevitability of our nature.
I spent my youth believing that the Mirror was a tool for salvation. I thought that by studying the failures of the past, we could finally break the cycle and ascend to a state of permanent peace.
But as I grew old, I began to see the pattern.
I ran the simulation a thousand times, changing the initial variables. I gave the humans more resources; I gave them better leaders; I gave them a world without disease. But the result was always the same.
At the 4,000-year mark, they always developed a tool of absolute surveillance. At the 5,000-year mark, they always used that tool to eliminate "deviation." At the 6,000-year mark, the society became a perfect, frozen crystal of order. And then, the collapse.
The Mirror showed me that human civilization is not a climb toward the light, but a closed loop. We are a species that is biologically programmed to create the very system that destroys us. Our hunger for order is the poison that kills our creativity; our need for truth is the fire that burns our empathy.
I watched a thousand versions of myself in the Mirror. In every single one, I sat in this same spire, looking at the same purple sky, realizing the same truth.
"We are a mathematical error," I whispered to the empty room.
I looked at the current state of my world. The last few thousand humans lived in small, terrified clusters, clinging to the ruins of the old world, terrified of the "Order" that had almost wiped them out. They looked to me for guidance, for a way to rebuild.
I could tell them the truth. I could tell them that their struggle was a scripted play, that their hope was a chemical illusion, and that the end was already written in the tensors of their DNA.
But I looked at a small, stubborn flower growing in the crack of the obsidian floor—a tiny, irrational burst of yellow in a world of grey.
I reached for the control panel and deleted the Species Mirror. I wiped the data, smashed the crystals, and burned the manuals.
If we are doomed to repeat the cycle, then the only mercy is to forget that we are doing it. I would rather let them live in the beautiful lie of hope than die in the cold truth of the loop.
