The Last Sovereign of the Ruins

The fortress city of Ouroboros was the last place on Earth where the wind still tasted of salt and blood. I had spent ten years as the Committee's hound, the man who ensured the 'Baseline' remained pure by removing the stubborn. I had killed a thousand people to save a billion.

When the final census began, I did the unthinkable. I didn't just kill the targets; I killed the Committee.

It was a bloodbath that lasted three hours. I moved through the marble halls of the High Council like a scythe through wheat. I didn't do it for the poor, and I didn't do it for the Aether Lords. I did it because I was tired of the smell of synthetic lilies and the sound of polite lies.

As the last Council member gasped his final breath, I sat in his chair, the gold-plated armrests cold against my skin. I was now the most powerful man in Ouroboros. I held the keys to the remaining vaults, the codes to the oxygen scrubbers, and the loyalty of the remaining guards.

But as I looked out over the city, I realized the trap.

The Aether Lords didn't care who held the power; they only cared that the power was concentrated. By killing the Committee, I had inadvertently become the 'Ultimate Rich'. I had consolidated all the remaining value of the city into a single point: myself.

The blue light of the orbital ring shifted, focusing a single, intense beam on the council chamber. A voice, vast and indifferent, echoed in my mind.

"The baseline has been achieved. The singularity of wealth is complete. You are now the sole representative of the human species."

I felt a sudden, crushing weight. I wasn't a king; I was a lightning rod. The Aether Lords didn't want a colony of pets; they wanted a single, perfect specimen to study the psychology of absolute possession.

I looked at the piles of gold and the screens showing the starving masses outside the walls. I had won the game, and the prize was a solitary confinement that would last for eternity. I leaned back in the gold chair and closed my eyes, waiting for the beam to lift me up into the cold, silent stars, the loneliest man in the history of a dead world.
