The Parasite's Waltz

The humidity of the Georgia coast felt like a wet blanket, smelling of salt, rot, and the slow decay of the old plantations. I returned to Oakhaven not as a son, but as a ghost with a badge. The town was a collection of sagging porches and weeping willows, where the history of slavery had simply evolved into a different kind of bondage.

People were vanishing. Not in the way you'd expect—no blood, no struggle. Just empty boots left on a porch, or a half-finished meal on a table. And the people who remained, the ones who had lived in the dirt for generations, were suddenly wearing silk suits and driving cars that cost more than the entire town.

I started with the Mayor. He was a man who had spent forty years pretending to be a servant of the people while stealing their land. Now, he sat in a mansion that looked like a gothic nightmare, his eyes shimmering with a strange, iridescent light.

"It's a new era, Detective," he said, his voice sounding like two stones grinding together. "The Aether Lords have shown us the way. Why struggle for crumbs when you can be the feast?"

I found the truth in the basement of the old mill. There were tanks of shimmering fluid, and inside them, the 'vanished' people were floating, their bodies pale and translucent. They weren't dead; they were being used as 'Biological Batteries'.

The rich hadn't just taken the money; they had found a way to transfer their consciousness into the bodies of the poor, using the Aether Lords' technology to 'swap' lives. The man in the silk suit wasn't the Mayor; he was a dying billionaire from New York who had bought the Mayor's youth and health. The original Mayor was now a floating husk, his mind trapped in a loop of eternal agony, providing the energy to sustain the new occupant.

The 'Wealth Liquidation' was just a cover. They weren't distributing money; they were distributing 'vessels'.

I stood in the dark, listening to the wet, rhythmic pulsing of the tanks. I realized that in this town, the only way to truly be free was to be so utterly worthless that no one wanted to steal your life. I looked at my own reflection in the glass—tired, broken, and poor. For the first time in my life, I felt a surge of genuine pride.
