**The Hunger of the Hollow**

The humidity of the Mississippi Delta didn't just dampen the clothes; it rotted the spirit. Silas Moore lived in a house that leaned away from the wind, surrounded by weeping willows that looked like hanged men. The town of Oakhaven called him a lunatic, but they still came to him when the dead wouldn't stay quiet.

Silas didn't want the job. He hated the coldness that settled in his bones every time he closed his eyes. He was a vessel for the Hollow—an ancient, ravenous shadow that lived in the marrow of his spine. The Hollow didn't care about morality; it only cared about hunger.

"Help me, Silas," pleaded Martha, a woman whose husband had vanished in the swamps. "They say you can hear the whispers from the mud."

Silas sighed, the sound like a dying bellows. He didn't use charms or incense. He simply let the Hollow take over. His eyes turned a void-like black, and his voice became a chorus of a thousand dead whispers.

He walked into the swamp, the mud clinging to his boots like desperate hands. He found the husband's soul, trapped in a cycle of terror, anchored to the earth by a single, jagged piece of obsidian embedded in his chest.

The Hollow surged, wanting to consume the soul. Silas fought it, his muscles straining, his mind screaming. He wasn't saving the man out of kindness, but out of a desperate need to keep the shadow satiated. With a guttural roar, he ripped the obsidian from the ghost's chest.

The soul vanished, finally free. But the cost was immediate. The Hollow, denied its feast, turned its hunger inward. Silas collapsed, his skin turning a sickly grey, his heart skipping beats as the shadow chewed through his vitality.

He crawled back to his porch, gasping for air. He looked at his hands and saw they were becoming translucent. He was becoming the very thing he fought—a ghost in a living body.

As the sun set over the decaying plantation, Silas realized the cruel joke of his existence: he was the only man in Oakhaven who could save everyone, but he was the only one who could never be saved. He lay back in his rocking chair, listening to the wind howl through the willows, waiting for the hunger to finally finish him.
