The Weight of Nothingness
Mark lived his life in a series of right angles. His apartment was a white cube; his wardrobe consisted of ten identical grey shirts; his day was a sequence of timed intervals, measured to the second by a watch that never lost a beat. He was a Senior Analyst at a firm that specialized in "Efficiency Optimization," a job that consisted of removing the unnecessary from the lives of others.
Mark loved the unnecessary. He just hated that it existed.
His obsession with purity led him to the "Void System." It was a piece of experimental software, a cognitive filter that promised to "streamline the soul." The system worked by identifying "redundant emotional data" and deleting it.
The first deletion was "Nostalgia."
Mark woke up and found that the old photographs of his parents no longer triggered a pang of longing. They were simply images of two people in a specific setting. He felt a sudden, exhilarating lightness. His work improved; he could analyze data without the interference of sentiment. He was promoted within a month.
Next, he deleted "Anxiety."
The crushing weight of the future vanished. He no longer worried about failure, illness, or death. He became a machine of absolute confidence. He navigated the corporate ladder with a cold, effortless grace, his decisions devoid of hesitation.
Then, he deleted "Empathy."
The voices of his colleagues became mere acoustic signals. Their suffering was a data point; their joy was a noise. He became the most efficient manager in the history of the firm, because he could fire a hundred people without a single flicker of hesitation in his pulse.
Mark was ascending. He was becoming a "Pure Being."
He continued the process, deleting "Longing," "Regret," "Doubt," and finally, "Love."
By the end of the second year, Mark had reached the zenith of the Void System. He had deleted everything that made him human. He was a consciousness of absolute clarity, a mind of pure logic, a god of efficiency.
He sat in his office on the 80th floor, looking out over the sprawling complexity of New York. For the first time, he saw the city for what it truly was: a chaotic, inefficient mess of contradictory desires and wasted energy. He felt a surge of power. He could optimize this. He could delete the noise of the city.
He accessed the city's infrastructure through the system, beginning to "streamline" the urban flow. He deleted the parks, for they were inefficient uses of space. He deleted the art galleries, for they provided no measurable utility. He deleted the street musicians, the poets, the lovers arguing in the rain.
The city became a perfect grid. The traffic flowed with mathematical precision. The people moved in synchronized lines. New York became a mirror of Mark's own soul: clean, efficient, and utterly silent.
Mark stood at the window, surveying his masterpiece. He waited for the feeling of triumph. He waited for the satisfaction of a job well done.
But there was nothing.
He realized that in deleting the "noise," he had also deleted the "signal." Without the contrast of pain, pleasure was meaningless. Without the friction of doubt, certainty was boring. Without the weight of love, existence was weightless.
He looked at his hands and realized they felt like they belonged to someone else. He tried to remember why he had wanted this purity in the first place, but the "Reason" had been deleted three months ago as a "redundant motivation."
Mark was a god of a void. He possessed the power to control everything, but he no longer had a single reason to want anything.
He opened the Void System one last time. He looked at the only remaining file in his consciousness: "Self."
He hovered the cursor over the "Delete" button. He knew that if he clicked it, he would vanish. But as he looked out at the perfect, grey, silent city he had created, he realized that he had already vanished.
He clicked.
The screen went black. The office went silent. And in the heart of the perfect city, a single, grey shirt fell to the floor, empty and light as a feather.
