The Weight of a Letter

The town of Oakhaven was a place where the wind always smelled of rust and dead grass. It was a town that had once built engines for the world, but now it only built graves. Bill worked at the post office, a grey building that served as the town's only remaining nervous system. He was a man of few words and fewer ambitions, his life a loop of sorting envelopes and avoiding eye contact.

Then Sam came back.

Sam was Bill's cousin, a man with a restless heart and a habit of taking things that didn't belong to him. He arrived in the middle of a Tuesday, drenched in sweat and smelling of desperation, with a bag of stolen bank notes and a target on his back.

"Just for a few days, Bill," Sam had pleaded. "Just until the heat dies down."

Bill didn't like stealing, but he liked family more. He hid Sam in the crawlspace of his old farmhouse, bringing him food and news of the police perimeter. He lied to the deputies, he diverted the search parties, and eventually, he helped Sam slip away under the cover of a moonless night.

"I owe you my life, Bill," Sam had whispered before disappearing into the woods.

Bill felt a strange, fleeting sense of pride. He had done something brave. He had been a protector.

But the law in Oakhaven didn't care about bravery; it cared about results. The police, frustrated by Sam's disappearance, began to look closer at Bill. They found the remnants of Sam's meals in the trash; they found a single, blood-stained glove in the barn.

They didn't arrest Bill immediately. Instead, they tore his life apart. They raided his home, destroying the few things he cherished. In the chaos of the search, Bill's wife, Martha—a woman whose heart was as fragile as a dried leaf—suffered a massive stroke. She died in the ambulance, her eyes wide with a terror she couldn't articulate.

Two weeks later, a letter arrived in the mail. It was from Sam, sent from a beach in Mexico.

"Thanks for everything, Bill. I'm set for life. Hope things are okay back home."

Bill sat at his kitchen table, the house silent and smelling of dust. He looked at the letter, then at the empty chair where Martha used to sit. He realized that the "義氣" he had felt—that kinship of blood—was a currency that only the rich could afford to spend. He had paid for Sam's freedom with the only thing that actually mattered in his life.

He didn't burn the letter. He just folded it carefully and put it in the trash, then went back to the post office to sort the mail for a town that was already dead.
