# Style: Psychological Thriller

The camp was a collection of plastic tents and mud-caked blankets, huddled on a strip of high ground that felt more like a grave than a sanctuary. The flood had taken everything—the town, the roads, the law. Now, there was only the Silt.

Leo sat in the corner of his tent, clutching a rusted knife. He didn't trust the others. In the first week, they had been a community of survivors. By the third week, they had become a pack of animals.

The hunger was a living thing, a parasite that gnawed at their minds. The government rations had stopped arriving days ago. The camp leader, a man named Miller who had once been a bank manager, now ruled through the distribution of a single, dwindling crate of canned peaches.

"We have to make a choice," Miller had said during the morning assembly, his eyes sunken and manic. "The resources are too low. We cannot carry the dead weight."

The "dead weight" were the sick and the elderly.

Leo watched as the camp began to turn on itself. It started with whispers, then accusations, then a sudden, violent purging. One by one, the "unproductive" were cast out into the mud, left to be consumed by the river or the fever.

Leo survived by becoming invisible. He learned to mimic the hunger of others, to hide his small stash of dried fish, and to never, ever look Miller in the eye. But the isolation was a different kind of hunger. He began to hear things—low, guttural whispers coming from the silt beneath his tent.

The voices told him that the water was not his enemy. The water was a mirror. It showed him the man he had become: a scavenger, a coward, a ghost.

On the fourteenth night, the whispers became a command.

Leo found himself standing over the sleeping form of a young boy, the last of the "dead weight" who had somehow survived the purge. The boy was shivering, his breath a shallow rattle. In the boy's hand was a small, plastic bag of crackers—the last food in the camp.

Leo's mind fractured. He saw the boy not as a child, but as the last obstacle between him and survival. He felt the knife in his hand, a cold extension of his own desperation.

He didn't remember the act. He only remembered the silence that followed, and the taste of the crackers, which tasted of salt and iron.

As the sun rose over the grey horizon, Leo looked at his reflection in a puddle of silt. He didn't recognize the man staring back. He had survived the flood, he had survived the purge, but as he looked into his own hollow eyes, he realized that the river had finally reached him. He was no longer a man; he was just another piece of debris, floating in a world where the only thing left to consume was the soul.
