The City of Glass Lies

Max lived in the gray. In New York, the rain didn't wash things clean; it just smeared the grime across the neon signs and the broken dreams of eight million people. He was the best "cleaner" in the business, a man who could make a body or a secret vanish into the East River without a ripple, a ghost in a city of noise.

For twelve years, he had served the Syndicate. He had killed for them, lied for them, and buried his own conscience under a mountain of blood-stained cash and expensive whiskey. He believed in the Code: Loyalty is the only currency that doesn't depreciate. He had convinced himself that he was a necessary evil, a surgeon cutting out the rot of the city to keep the machine running.

The collapse happened in a windowless office on the 42nd floor, where the air was filtered and the silence was absolute. Max had just returned from a "cleanup" in Jersey when he found a folder on his boss's desk, left open as if by accident, or perhaps as a final, cruel joke. It wasn't a list of targets; it was a ledger of liabilities.

His name was there, but not as an employee. He was listed as an "Asset for Liquidation."

The dates were precise, the calculations cold. The Syndicate hadn't been paying him for his skill; they had been paying him to be the fall guy for a series of political assassinations that had gone sideways. Every man he had killed, every "justice" he thought he had served, was a calculated move to protect the men in the suits, and now that the heat was dying down, the tool was no longer needed.

Max walked out of the building and stood in the pouring rain, the water soaking through his expensive wool coat. He looked at his hands, the hands that had been so loyal, and realized they were covered in the blood of people who didn't even exist in the official records. He felt a sudden, violent urge to laugh, a sound that was drowned out by the roar of the city.

He didn't go home. He went to the river, where the water was black and oily. He watched a piece of trash float by, spinning in a slow, hopeless circle, caught in an eddy it could never escape. He realized that in the city of glass, the only thing transparent was the lie he had lived. He reached for his gun, not to fight a war he had already lost, but to finally stop the ticking of the clock.
