Eleanor Vance stood at the edge of the Yorkshire cliffs, the wind tearing at her coat, and realized that the letter she held was not just a letter—it was a map. Not of roads or rivers, but of silences. The silences that had defined her family for three generations.

The letter had arrived three days ago, postmarked from a town she had never heard of. Inside was a single sentence: 'Your grandfather did not die in the war. He vanished into the Map of Silence, and I need your help to bring him back.'

Eleanor had laughed when she read it. Her grandfather had died in 1943, missing in action over the Burma campaign. That was the official story, the one in the letters from the War Office, the one on his memorial plaque in the village church.

But the letter said otherwise. And when Eleanor had shown it to her grandmother—eighty-nine years old and sharp as a tack—the old woman had gone very still and said: 'So they've found it, have they? The map? Then you must go, Eleanor. You must go and finish what your grandfather started.'

The journey had taken her to this cliff edge, to a stone tower that shouldn't exist, to a door that opened onto a staircase that spiraled down into darkness. And at the bottom of those stairs, she had found it.

The Map of Silence. A document the size of a dining table, covered in lines that glowed faintly in the dark. Lines that showed not geography, but the connections between unsaid things. Between the words people choked back. Between the truths they carried to their graves.

And there, in the center of the map, was her grandfather's name.

Eleanor traced the line that led from his name to a mark she didn't recognize. A place? A person? A silence so profound it had created its own geography?

She didn't know. But she was going to find out. Even if it meant walking into the silence herself.
