The Bone Flute

The mammoth fell on the third day of the hunt, and with it fell the old world.

Kara watched the great beast collapse into the snow, its legs folding like branches under too much ice. The hunters were already running toward it, their spears raised, but Kara didn't move. She was listening to the sound the mammoth made as it died—a low, vibrating groan that seemed to come from the center of the earth.

When the beast was dead, the tribe gathered around it. Old Tenek, the shaman, knelt by the mammoth's head and placed his ear against the skull. He listened for a long time. Then he stood up and announced: "The mammoth has given us its voice. I will make a flute from its bone, and we will hear the voice of the ice age."

Kara was fifteen winters old, and she had never heard music. The tribe had only the sound of flint on stone, the wind over the steppe, the crying of children. But when Tenek hollowed out the mammoth's thigh bone and carved holes into it and blew—Kara felt something crack open inside her chest.

The sound was like nothing she had ever heard. It was the sound of wind, but wind with a soul. It was the sound of the mammoth's last breath, captured and made permanent. It was, Kara realized with a shiver, the sound of spirits.

That night, Tenek fell ill. His breath rattled in his chest like stones in a gourd. He called Kara to his side. "The flute," he whispered. "It has too much spirit. It is killing me. You must take it. You must learn to play it, or the mammoth's ghost will devour the tribe."

Kara took the bone flute. It was cold, and it smelled of old blood and mammoth fat. She put it to her lips and blew.

The sound that came out was not music. It was a howl. A hunting cry. The sound of the ice age ending and a new age beginning. Kara played until her lungs burned and her lips cracked. And when she stopped, she saw that the tribe was weeping.

They had heard it too. The voice of the world before words.
