Neon Stigmata

Kai's stigmata glowed cyan through the synth-skin of his palms. Two wounds that weren't wounds—ports, really, installed three jobs ago by a back-alley ripperdoc who smelled like ozone and desperation. They connected directly to Kai's augmented memory core, and right now they were screaming.

Someone had hacked his past.

Not his data. His past. The actual sequence of events that had made him who he was. Someone had edited his memories, splicing in new ones that felt realer than the old ones, and Kai couldn't tell which was which anymore.

He sat in the back booth of the Electric Confessional, a dive bar in Neo-Kowloon's tenth level, nursing a drink that tasted like battery acid and regret. The neon cross above the bar pulsed in rhythm with his stigmata. Synchronicity, or a hack. At this point, he couldn't tell the difference.

"You're leaking," said a voice from across the table.

Kai looked up. A woman. Chrome-jawed, one eye replaced with a sensor array that whirred as it focused. Her left arm ended in a toolkit rather than a hand.

"Leaking what?"

"Memory fragments. Emotional residue." She tapped her chrome jaw. "I can taste it. You've been ghost-hacked. Someone's rewriting your timeline."

"You're a mnemonic engineer?"

"I'm Mara. And you're Kai Chen, formerly of the Red Orchid Collective, currently a mess." She slid into the booth across from him. "I know who did this to you."

"Who?"

"NeuroDyne. The corp you stole the empathy algorithms from, four years ago. The job you don't remember doing because they already started editing then. They've been slow-cooking your brain for forty-six months, waiting for exactly this moment."

Kai's stigmata flared white-hot. A memory surfaced—not his, not anymore: standing in a rain-soaked alley, holding a data-canister that contained code worth seventeen lives, deciding in a heartbeat to take it and run.

"That job," Kai said. "Did I—did people die?"

"People always die, Kai. That's not the question." Mara reached across the table with her tool-hand, the instruments clicking softly against each other. "The question is: what are you going to do about the fact that they turned you into their sleeper agent? Because in seventy-two hours, the final edit completes. And then you won't be Kai anymore. You'll be their weapon. You just won't know it."

The bar's neon cross flickered. Outside, the rain began to fall in sheets that looked like cascading binary.

Kai looked at his glowing hands. Two ports. Two wounds. Two chances.

"Fix me," he said.

Mara smiled, and her chrome jaw gleamed. "Oh, I'm going to do more than fix you. I'm going to make you remember everything. Even the parts that hurt. Especially those."

She took his hand, and the stigmata blazed like a small star being born in the dark of the tenth level.
